A good dusting should be fine - if it's really dirty, clean with a damp cloth. Or, you can take the glass past off (assuming it's glass) and hand wash with soap and water.

You don't say whether it is a hanging light or a regular ceiling mounted one, but it's basically the same with both. Use a duster wand to dust off the main outside parts of the light. If it has a glass of plastic shade, remove it & wash in the sink with a little dish soap & sponge. Dry & replace. Dust when you usually dust the house, clean the shade when you notice dead bugs laying in it.
