anything in particular to worry about? besides killing myself.

I bought the plug w/ the 3 loose wires sticking out as well as the new hot water line and elbow to replace the current copper line. the middle one looks like the green (ground) but i can't tell which one is the black or white one, they all have metal tips. Also, do i have to have the little plastic tops to twist the wires together? or electrical tape sufficient?

On a Tuesday morning I found a stain on a bedroom ceiling, indicating there was a leak in my roof somewhere. The weather forecast for Wed said torrential rains were coming so I went to the first contractor I found. The worker walked around on the side of the roof where the leak was found, hammered a few nails, sealed down some shingles, caulked a few areas and left with $450 of my money. Did I get ripped off, or because it was short notice and in light of the impending bad weather, was this cost justified in any way? (The contractor told me to mix equal parts water and bleach in a spray bottle, spray this on the ceiling stain and when the stained section matches the rest of the ceiling, to stop. At that point, I'm to keep an eye on that spot to be sure the stain doesn't reappear.) So, what do you think - I'm a widow and don't have all the knowledge I should, but I sure hate to get "taken". At this point, it'll just be a lesson learned, but at least I'll know better next time!

I took the chicken out of the fridge a few minutes ago - still a little frosty from the freezer. There is a slight scent - how can I be sure it is safe to eat?

The soil is washing out and I would like to plant something that looks nice and would also help keep the area from washing out. I live in zone 7.

My friend has told me that it is not legal to have carpet in the bathroom of rented accommodation. I have just signed the contract to rent a property and it does have carpet in the bathroom. I don't know about it either way. Any advice on this, thanks

About once every 7-8 times I use my microwave oven, I get this awful, very loud electrical buzzing and popping sound. It's so loud that it's very startling. Sounds like what I imagine someone getting electrocuted would sound like... I immediately shut the power off, then restart it, and it usually goes away until the next time, which is, again, typically 7 or 8 uses later... What gives?

I don't ever put anything metal in my microwave, so that's not it, in case that's what you were thinking...

I remember My great Aunt making pillows that started as a long rectangle of fabric, a graph of dots was drawn down the center and the dots are sewn together using a specifc pattern. This forms a complicated pleated pillow top. Anyone know what this is called and where I can get instructions?

The part on my shoes that is suppose to be white has now turned brown, and I've tried using bleach but it didn't do much for me at all. If I bought a magic eraser, would that help, or should I just toss the shoes in the trash?

I am writing a book and I want to describe the fireplaces in a couple of the rooms but I have no idea what is an appropriate size for different size rooms. This is a mansion so some of the rooms are very large.

My son has just bought a used Rover 400. The car is nicely turned out but the previus owner definitely enjoyed smoking with the windows up! It stinks. Is there an effective remedy short of putting the car in for a thorough valetting? The car has stretched his budget so cash is tight for him at present.

the studio has an ugly dark brown carpet and white walls and I can't change that. its so small that i can ony fit a futon and maybe a shelf for books and a tv.
i want to get a black futon and black shelf...i want my color scheme to be black, deep red (not bright), and maybe some dark green, olive or gray in there, i don't know. Heres' what i have planned- please help me..
i was thinking of getting a nice deep red throw blanket i saw to accent the futon, this is what i need help on:
1) what color area rug should i get, soemthing to take away from the ugly brown carpeting and to match my theme.
2) should i get little arm pillows and what color?
3) and should i get curtains- and also what color?
i'm good at cleaning, but no so much at decoarting-- i tend to be too matchy-matchy and sometimes it looks tacky.
