When carpets are made, the fibre part will face in one direction. This is called the nap. Snooker fans will have heard the same word with the cloth on tables. The nap of the carpet is normally put on stairs facing downstairs.

So if a rug moves to the right, the carpet has been laid with the nap to the right. Every week I have to pull a small fireside rug back from my fireplace.

The only thing I've considered is buying one of those car boot anti slip mats and putting a chunk of it under the rug, but never bothered.

You can a package of rubberised rug liner that keeps the rugs from slipping, I even cut it down into squares to put under the seat cushions on my wood chairs. You can get the non-slip rug liner at Walmart, and Bed Bath and Beyond. It comes in many sizes, you can cut it to fit.

I have the same problem with the big rug in my living room.. What we did was got two long skinny nails and nailed the corners down. You can see the nails and the rug doesn't move an inch.. Worked great.
The non slip rug pads did not work very well... Neither does velcro...ect. *(we have tried everything!)

There are pads you can get to keep rugs in place. Some are made to use under rugs on tile, and some are for rugs on carpet. They both work really well, and are fairly inexpensive. You can probably find them in any place that sells carpet.

Betterware or Kleeneze (one or the other) do a tape which you put underneath the rug. It's sticky, but doesn't damage the rug or carpet. Bit of a pig to put on, though, cos it also sticks to your hands!

good old fashioned double sided tape works great on my front door mat. i don't know if it will leave a mark (because i have not tried to lift it ) but even if it does i will always need a rug there so i don't mind.

Mine is the same I have nearly landed on my backside a few times I was told by someone to put evo stick glue on it and let it dry and that should stop it from slipping, only don't stick it to the floor just let it dry.
