The soil is washing out and I would like to plant something that looks nice and would also help keep the area from washing out. I live in zone 7.

dogwood bush, alpine currant , spirea, cotoneaster, burning bush, dwarf lilac, shrub junipers. these shrubs grow from 3 to 6 feet and grow best in full sun. you'll need far more than just 1 row of them to help control soil erosion though.

Sorry, don't know waht Zone 7 is.

You could do worse than use perennial grasses. There are lots of shapes, colours, sizes and textures, and a good fibrous root mass. Interplant with single "daisy" species to give a "prarie" effect.
