There are a couple of other plants that are not called butterfly bushes that have flowers shaped like butterflies. Cleodendrum unganese (blue and white butterfly shaped flowers), cassia (yellow butterfly shaped flowers). There is also a vine that has butterfly shaped green flowers, maybe called butterfly vine. The shrubs that are called butterfly bushes are buddelias, they have flowers that are made of many tiny tubular shaped flowers that are shaped like a pointy tube shape or skinny v shape (called a racine by one description I read.

Butterfly bush comes in purple, lilac, reddish, pink and probably a few other shades. This is the first year I grew one and it grew from a small root to 6 feet tall in a matter of months. The bloom looks just like a lilac bloom. I wouldn't be surprised if they were very closely related. Whatever it is you have is not a butterfly bush.

They come in a variety. Some bushes are white, some purple, some pink, and I think there is even a bush with all three!
These bushes don't LOOK like butterflies, but they sure attract them like crazy!
These blooms are siimilar in looks to the lilac.

A butterfly bush doesn't actually have blooms that LOOK like butterflies - they attract butterflies. The blooms can be red, pink, white, purple and they are a slender, long cluster of tiny tiny blooms.

the flowers are real tiny but in long cone shape clusters usually in colors of dark purple, lilac, reddish, or white.. the bushes usually get pretty large if you keep trimming dried up flower clusters off two sprout in the place of each one. and yes butterflies really love them. i have several in my yard covered with butterflies all summer long!! they are beautiful!!
