I'm hoping someone can help me, and it's not an emergency. I've got a smoke detector in my basement that is going off. It's near a dryer and near my oil furnace, but there is no visible fire. I know that a shower can make a smoke detector go off. Is there something that I'm overlooking that would cause this to happen?

The backyard of my house slopes down toward a rotting wood retaining wall, and then drops off steeply into a ravine. We have been losing soil down the slope with all the rain we get here. I would like to find out which plants, shrubs, or even trees would be effective at retaining the soil. There is only one bush in the backyard right now, which appears to be some sort of holly. It seems to be retaining the soil around it. The backyard gets very little sun.

Thanks for your help!

We added an addition with the third zone, and the furnace was not heating the room - just ran constantly. So the plumbers adjusted the water temp to 170 degrees. Now the furnace runs most of the time, and we have consumed twice as much oil as this time last year. The room does heat well now.

I have seen ads for granite 'caps' that fit over the existing countertops. It gives the look of 3 or 4 cm granite countertops without the high price. What is this process called and are there web links to companies who price / do this? Are there suppliers / installers in the DFW, TX area?

I'm moving into an attic. Two of the walls are essentially the "roof" and the two other walls are "triangular" and have such large windows that placing furniture on them isn't possible without covering them. It is a large space and the ceiling is probably 12' at the "peak". Any ideas for working with sloped walls?

This is for a non profit organization (H.U.M.) in which proceed go to help the homeless. We deal strictly with donations, so I won't have a lot of money to work with. Does anyone know of any thing they would like to donate. We will pick up and give Tax deduction for any donations. We need some nice furniture, if anyone has anything they were thinking of getting rid of. Also we need a countertop with showcase. Thank You
