you would have to get one whopper of an electric motor to match the 5hp gas one,, those little engines are not hard to fix unless they are totally shot!! If you put an electric motor you will have to jury rig the base to it and align it with the drive that goes to the chipper,,it can be done if you are knowledgeable enough,, after all they do sell electric ones too!!

I have to agree with Fuzzy. Beside the fact that the motor size would have to be considerably larger in size, the amps it will draw will cost more than gasoline. The other issue is the motor/engine designs in their differences. I won't explain the differences, I'll just assume you realize them as Piston drive versus rotating armeature driven then transfering power through belts etc.

As the second answer suggests I suggest bite the bullet and get the gas engine repaired or buy new.

5 hp electric motor. You would have to go with 220 volts. Repair the gasoline motor. Or buy a new one if its toasted.

why would you bother?? they aren't that expensive new. or better yet, go to a pawn shop, they usually have plenty.
