A few planks can help. Just use 2 for sides and one for top. You can even add a front with a piece of MDF or plywood. It can all be assembled with screws so it can be dismantled when you move and it should stand free in front of the fireplace without needing to be attached. You can paint it or do some kind of decoration on it to make it look more permanent and solid. I've done similar things myself (usually when my husband is at work!) LOL I built a windowseat while he was at work and 20 year later (and 2 houses later) I still use it in different ways.

Actually I saw this on trading spaces. Check out the repeat episodes to get ideas. You could also just make a neat hanging shelf with some attractive chains for added support; You can easily make a frame to build around the fireplace and create your own mantle. I found this one on Do It Yourself network. http://www.doityourself.com/stry/buildfireplacemantel

an outstanding slab of marble or fieldstone frequently serves as an eye-catching and straightforward to maintain fireplace mantle. those are frequently truly affordable from a quarry. Stone masons or shops that promote stone or ceramic tile, frequently understand the position to get those and they are frequently decrease to in effective condition.

you can go to home depot and they would be able to help you get the supplies and instructions on how to make a mantle that you could just hang. or you could always try home stores and see if you could get one. they just might not have one long enough.
