metal bars and, wooden beams, are not comfortable. try to find one with springs, webbing or, at the very least, wooben slats ( flat ). when We were in the process of moving, We slept on a metal one and, it took My back the better part of two weeks, to recover.

Futons are bulky so if you're low on space i don't think going with a futon is a better choice. Any sleeping mat will do the job. I have never slept on any futon for decades despite being japanese. I always sleep directly on the wooden floor, summer or winter and I've been doing fine all along. Not just bulky, they are heavy and not easy to tuck away in the closet. That's the reason I don't use any futon. They take up space.

I've found that "you get what you pay for" to be pretty much the norm in quality. Comfort is a personal matter, so you would have to test it.

I bought one and the best for comfort is to find one that has springs built in.
