I have a piece of dark brown wood furniture but I prefer Cherry colored ones. If I use Restore-A-Finish in Cherry would that change the color of the furniture?

Thank you!

NO.YOU WILL HAVE TO USE A STAIN, AFTER YOU SAND THE OTHER OFF

Sanding the floor for scratches and stains is mandatory. It is like using a giant booboo eraser. Chemicals are messy and dangerous. A belt sander would be fine. Just have enough belts to change them occasionally. Start with rough(coarse) sandpaper to get the old finish off. Use finer sand paper to smooth out gouges and leave a nice finish to the floor. You can rent giant floor sanders or if you have time buy a regular hand size one from Harbor Freight or Home Depot or such. Vacuum your floor well after sanding, use a brush to get off the dust. After wards, you get to pick colours for your floor, the stain. Staining gives your floor the reddish brownish greenish etc colours you like to have. It will soak into the wood and be there for a long time. A final coat finish is the coating like a wax to help make you floor last and be more cleanable. Urethane/polyurethane is the clear coat of finish that is most protective. Like an indoor basketball court. It is usually clear but darkens your floor just as water would. The end colour depends a LOT on the type of wood . Polyurethane takes awhile to dry and dust is the enemy. Just like new paint(which it is) it attracts dust particles. Pick a day with warm air and low humidity and no wind. Some bad spots can be sanded lightly once it is well dried. Staining and wax is you putting the colours in the wood then a wax coating over the wood and stain. It won't let you paint it with polyurethane after that. wax is not quite as durable as Polyurethane. You can also do multiple coats of wax or multiple coats of urethane (just as multiple coats of house paint) for more protection. If the floors are just scratched, they can be lightly sanded and coated with the urethane or another coat of wax. You may not be able to do any staining if the old coatings are still in place. Hope it gives you some thoughts on the matter.

Restore-a-finish is a great product, but it can't lighten a finish. It might add some reddish tint to the brown, but you can't lighten the finish without stripping off the existing finish.
