I have a three way lamp, and have a 3 way bulb in it. Is it safe to replace that bulb with those compact flourescent bulbs that save electricity, but, obviously don't have the three way function.

I'm trying to get a specific heat of around 350-400 degrees. The heater puts out around 1076 degrees. The watts are only 1000. I would like to plug the infrared heater to a 120 volt outlet and get a varialble voltage transformer to adjust from there.

Here is the heater: http://www.mcmaster.com/ part # 3110K72

If I wire the 230 volt to fit the 120 volt outlet will it cut my power in half, thus having around half the heat? Or is this incorrect?

There is no motors to worry about, just the heating element itself.

My bedroom is next to a busy road and a lot of noise gets through the window - despite the double glazing!
On the advice of someone on this site I am planning to obtain a large sheet of foam to cover the window at night. Could someone recommend
A) The best type of foam to use for this (ie density etc)?
B) Roughly what thickness I would require for good noise reduction properties?
C) A good place to buy it?

many thanks

My apartment was painted yesterday and as I expected, there is a smell but this smell seems a bit more harsh then regular paint, its so strong that it burns my eyes even with all the windows opened. Should I be worried about this? Could this paint be toxic? Also, I have had a headache since last night which may or may not be due to the paint fumes, is this cause for concern? I did not do the painting myself and the painters took the cans with them so I can't look on the label.

I clean for a lady who has finished, hardwood flooring. She mentioned interest in having me use "oil and vinegar" to clean her floor. I've done a little bit of searching on google and though oil SOAP with vinegar are suggested for oiled instead of finished floors, for finished flooring, just some vinegar (1/2 cup) in a bucket of warm water is suggested - minus the oil. Does anyone out there know anything more about this recipe?

I have the walls in my shower removed and I'm rebuilding and retiling them. My shower head kits include new hot / cold water mixers. Should I replace them? The old one leaks a bit, but could it just require a rebuild kit? The reason I ask is because replacing it would require me re-soldering the new unit in and cutting the old unit out.

Thanks.

My room is fairly large (its about 12' x 24', but is not exactly a rectangle. It has one big rectangle and another tiny one attached to it) and my furniture is mostly modern-style black furniture. I have wood floors. I want my room to have a modern feel. What color do you think I should paint my room? (I am not opposed to more than one color)

50 degrees North latitude corresponds roughly to Vancouver, Quebec City, Frankfurt am Main, and Kyiv. The rhizomes were overdue for separation. Dug up on 26 Nov. due to nearby paving. Cellared storage space is available. If Spring planting is best, recommend storage medium/method, please. New planting depth for the rhizomes is to be with only 1-2"/3-5 cm. soil over the rhizome, with leaves trimmed by 1/2-2/3 original height, correct?

I walked in to my best mates house the other day to find him on his knees with cooking another mans socks!
I asked him when he turned from tradition and started to act this way and he broke down to tell me he had cooked socks for some time. He had gone off his old scrubber and dodgy boiler and was enjoying the liberating experience of cooking socks like they used to in the wild west (San Francisco I think he meant).
He was so good at it some men had even paid him to cook their socks using his mobile deserted car park visiting service as their wives had lost the knack of getting all the dirt out of the seams.
He said all you need is an old pan handle, a pan, a bit of fire, some water and soap, a funnel and pipe to get the water in for the cleaning and I too could be a sock cooker. I declined as I was happy with the results I got form my hoover.
What would you do if your best mate had started to act this way with his laundry? How do you convince him to start doing it right again?

I am rubbish at DIY and need to repair a large tear in the vinyl flooring or, alternatively, replace it. I thought self adhesive vinyl tiles might be the easiest way, is this correct? I want minimum effort and diy skill required methods please!
