I want to decorate the tree in front of my home with lights,the cord has to be connected to my outside electrical outlet which is on the side of my house going up a hill,how do I keep it out the way of people that walk (on the sidewalk)? and Is duct tape safe to make it waterproof?

they have weatherproof lights at home depot and the like for use outdoors. they have a protective coating. i think its too risky using indoor lights if they will be exposed to snow/water.

All outdoor electrics should be protected from the weather. If you are planning on putting up lights where the public might have contact then this is even more important. Duct tape is definately not suitable. Talk to an electrician as it is essential to see the site inorder to provide an accurate, safe answer.

Duct tape is not a sufficient insulating/waterproofing material

Note that poorly fitted electrics can break building regulations and leave you liable to prosecution

i think they make waterproof extension cords,check with a home building outlet.

if you use lights rated for outdoor use, protection is not necessary
