Have you tried the Mr. Clean Eraser sponges? I had some oily spatter/residue on the outside of my toaster oven for months and tried lots of cleaning solutions to no avail. So I gave up. Then I bought the Mr. Clean Eraser sponges for something else and tried it on the toaster oven, just in case and viola! It came off with just a little elbow grease. Those things are amazing!

I hope this helps!

If the build up is on the outside, you could try a Soft Scrub, or maybe try using that special cleaner (name escapes me at the moment) that folks use to clean glass top stoves (sold in grocery stores) - don't use a lot of elbow grease just enough to loosen it up, (That way you won't scratch the finish on the outside) then go at the build up with something like Soft Scrub.

Good Luck.

Edit: It is the name of the product used to clean glass top stoves is called: "Cooktop Magic". I also found another one out there that might be of help called, "Cerama Bryte". Both are ceramic cooktop cleaners. The Cerama Bryte also sells scrapers and cleaning pads to help get the job cleaned.
