The foundation in most homes is only 4 inches thick. This causes the foundation to crack in 8 to 10 years as the ground shifts. The house is built with cheap wood, termite treated, they claim. The house is priced at 150,000 to half a million or more dollars. Yet the house is built for under 50,000. The profit the builders make on each home is outrageous. In Louisiana and other places, hurricanes lift these homes and the insurance damages are colossal.

In India, the homes are built with a 3 feet deep foundation and 9 inch thick brick walls. The houses never burn down, the hurricane can do nothing to the house and the house never has to be insured against fire or storms. Here the insurance companies are a big scam and most homes are built out of cheap material and the insurance is high. When will this change? When will home builders give buyers the actual value of the home they purchase? I am not against the lenders taking interest nor against the home builders making a profit.

I'm renting a house with old wardrobes and worn cabinets that I want to re-decorate. I have an idea that a solution is to find an adhesive, peelable, opague, decorative film or laminate that I can paste over the existing surfaces which I can remove without damaging the original surfaces when I eventually move out. And so I don't get hassled by the landlords.
Does anyone know of such a product? Or does anyone have another solution for me? Thanks.

I thought of black and white pictures of us and my son, which I might do, but would it be too tacky to put up Normal Rockwell paintings? Or photos of scenery?

I got from my future aunt-in-law (heheheh) an old Mikasa Torte Plate. I was wondering a coupe of things.

1. What function does a Torte Plate have? Is it just decorative or do you serve on it?

2. I did a search and came up with 2 websites in German. The information I have is it is a Mikasa Carmen Satiert Torte Plate. It was made in Germanyand has Art.-Nr. 1828/0 on the box. Does anyone have any information about this plate? I don't have a date when it was made but it was probably in the 70's sometime.

I have been living in my apartment for just over a year, and in that time my screw-in towel rack has held up well. But just recently, as things do eventually do, it fell out and the screws left ugly, gaping holes in the wall. I should mention these were reinforced screws, since the walls are plaster. So naturally I repaired the holes and relocated the rack elsewhere in the room, with new screws of course. And in less then a month, it falls out again and leaving another set of holes in the wall. I can't have this disaster repeat itself again. Most racks are screw-in, which because of this mess I would prefer to avoid. And I don't have enough room for a free-standing one. Is there another means of going about this? What should I do?

I just moved into an older house. The caulk in the bathtub from the previous owner was falling apart. I took out the old caulk, but there is grout behind that. This is the area where the tile wall meets the tub, which I've heard should never be grouted. It should just have caulk. Do I need to remove all the grout before recaulking, or can I just recaulk over the old grout?

Our apartment has a TINY dirt area inside the back patio, it is in view of our living room, kitchen, and dining room. The area is 4' long and a little over a foot wide (deep) rectangular. The back and left sides are against a fence and the other two sides are surrounded by concrete. I want to use this small area to add some astetic value to the patio. Something pretty, that makes you want to spend time outside. I live in North Carolina, in zone 7 on both types of zoning charts. The area drains well as the opposite side of the back fence sloaps downward. I've thought about using the space to grow herbs, my roomate and I both like to cook. Maybe planting flowers, or something that would creep up the fence (I'm not sure how the landlord would feel about that one). And of course...we're on a budget. Any and all ideas are appreciated!

the garbage trucks collect garbage only once a week. Right now we just put daily garbage in the garage but it stinks up the whole place. We can't leave it outside because it'll surely attract flies. So is there any smart way to go about this?
