Our apartment has a TINY dirt area inside the back patio, it is in view of our living room, kitchen, and dining room. The area is 4' long and a little over a foot wide (deep) rectangular. The back and left sides are against a fence and the other two sides are surrounded by concrete. I want to use this small area to add some astetic value to the patio. Something pretty, that makes you want to spend time outside. I live in North Carolina, in zone 7 on both types of zoning charts. The area drains well as the opposite side of the back fence sloaps downward. I've thought about using the space to grow herbs, my roomate and I both like to cook. Maybe planting flowers, or something that would creep up the fence (I'm not sure how the landlord would feel about that one). And of course...we're on a budget. Any and all ideas are appreciated!

Why not do something that will climb and flower. Something that will be pretty to look at and add some value to your patio. Look at some climbing, flowering vines. Check with the nursery on how invasive your selection will be. You do not want the vine to destroy something and you need to know how to prune it and keep it under control. Look at Bouganvilla, Carolina Jasmine, Star Jasmine, maybe a climbing rose or Crossvine. Wisteria is beautiful, but you'd probably need something else for it to hold on to. A wisteria vine is really strong and can crush things you want to preserve. Good Luck. Use your local professionals or nurserymen, not Lowes or Home Depot.

Use shelves, and hanging baskets "on" the fence.
On the ground, use the plastic step risers, and put your plants here.
