I have been living in my apartment for just over a year, and in that time my screw-in towel rack has held up well. But just recently, as things do eventually do, it fell out and the screws left ugly, gaping holes in the wall. I should mention these were reinforced screws, since the walls are plaster. So naturally I repaired the holes and relocated the rack elsewhere in the room, with new screws of course. And in less then a month, it falls out again and leaving another set of holes in the wall. I can't have this disaster repeat itself again. Most racks are screw-in, which because of this mess I would prefer to avoid. And I don't have enough room for a free-standing one. Is there another means of going about this? What should I do?

You need to buy or borrow a 'stud finder' that allows you to locate the wood support behind the plaster, then you can use a screw directly.

Most racks like yours are based on 16 inch centers. This is so you can make them screw into the studs in the walls. Find the studs with a stud finder or a magnet and screw into them. This will prevent the screws from pulling out.

There has to be studs in the wall somewhere. Go to lowes, home depot, wal-mart, or any hardware store and purchase a stud finder they aren't that expensive (someone you know may even have one), then locate the studs. Use screws long enough to reach them through the drywall. You won't have that problem any more.

Often towel racks don't match 16" centers so if wall is hollow use toggle bolts. They're very strong.

You shouldnt be fixing something that your paying for, to work..Your rent pays for a person "maintance man" to do all repairs in your apartent..if your gonna fix things yourself..might as well geta house................Hey...go mow thier lawn too. I wouldnt even touch your towel rack. Put in a work order. and by the way.....its not your wall...its the owners...mess it up and they'll charge you.
