Find another occupation! But if you insist on being a gardener don't put weed killer on anything apart from weeds and practice makes perfect!

Test your soil for nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium and treat with the appropiate fertilizer(s). Incorporate as much organic material into your soil as you can. Feed the soil and the plants will take care of themselves. Pull weeds that compete with your desirable plants. Water regularly, most plants will thrive on 1" of water a week although drier climates require more water. A two inch layer of organic mulch will conserve water. Look on the web for a state college in your state, as many have extension services with a lot of on-line info, plus you may be able to get consultations with them. Many perform soil tests. Also check for Master Gardener programs available. These are often free moneywise, but require community service involving gardening. Good luck and enjoy.
