That is definitely something that you can't predict, it just happens. If it's and old water tank and you think it's about had it go ahead and change it. Nothing more messy than one breaking, I've had it happen to a few friends of mine.

OMG dont listen to the answers here! Hahaha I have replaced my hot water heater basically ever 5-6 years. you didnt say if electric or gas, and most assume your speaking gas. Electric which I have lasts about that long, if you had one 10 years your really lucky! you can tell by a few things. first obvious clue is water leaking from it. Another is when you drain your heater for 1 min from the bottom valve,(what you dont drain this?) your water will be sluggish or trickle out meaning its getting full of sediment and possibly affecting the elements.. another way is if it keeps tripping...

The general rule is to go ahead and replace them after about 10 to 12 years. If they are in a place where a leak will ruin a lot of your house and there is no drip pan with drain to protect you, I'd do it at 10 years and have the piece of mind knowing there problem had been eliminated.
You will have to spend the money sooner or later and the cost is not that much in most places.

I've heard that they go around 10-12 years. My parents just went out at 12 and it was just a small leak.

they rust and start to leak a little. when they start to leak replace them. the serial number has a date (year) in it. look for that two digit year to see how old it is. they last about 8-15 years depending on family size.
