Depends what you mean by a closed system. If you mean the system has no header tank, has an expansion vessel and filling loop this system should not air lock unless it's been loosing pressure. Check for vent points around the cylinder and check the systems pressure.

On the other hand if you have a heating feed and expansion tank I'll bet you've got a blockage at the cold feed to the system, have a poke around the return pipework with a magnet and if it starts to stick to the copper pipe you've got sludged. For a quick get out of jail fix... Chap it gently with a spanner to loosen off the blockage, but be care-full not to burst any pipework... Has pulled me out a hole many times.

If it is only the hot water side then try opening all of the hot taps in the house, let them run for a while and close them one by one. This may get rid of air in the system. Otherwise it may be the diverter valve if it is a combi boiler. Good luck!

i get this allot when i have to empty a tank for some reason and all i do is get a short piece of hosepipe and connect it from a cold tap to a hot tap and turn them both on and force the cold water down the hot water tap and vice versa. it can be a bit messy and wet but it cures your problem

YOUR HOT WATER SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE AN EXPANSION TANK@ THE HIGHEST POINT OF THE SYSTEM. ON THE EXPANSION TANK THERE SHOULD BE A BLEEDER VALVE FOR THE AIR. OPEN THIS UP WITH THE SYSTEM IN OPERATION AND KEEP IT OPEN UNTIL YOU GET A STEADY STREAM OF WATER COMING FROM IT.

If you have a combi boiler you will not have a return from your hot water!
Get the yellow pages out, get quotes from plumbers, but do not get the cheapest.
