Ive replaced a LOT of drywall in mobile homes over the years, but the process is the same for a site built home. Here is how I and my service crews went about it.
First, lay down plastic over the floor where you are going to tear out the drywall... this makes clean up much easier and faster.
Using a utility knife, score about a 12" square on the wall, (about chest high) in between the studs, and then score it from corner to corner. Then, use your hammer, and hit the center of that cut. The sheetrock will break along the score lines made with the utility knife. Pull the pieces back out of the way, leaving a hole, and now you have a way to start pulling the drywall off the studs. Repeat as necessary.
Most drywall is nailed and glued in place... you will need to pull any nails (or staples, if a mobile home). A prybar, and long handled pliers come in handy for this, along with your hammer.
Now you are ready to scrape the glue off... a very sharp chisel is good for this, or an impact wrench with a chisel attachment. You only want to remove the glue, not chunks of wood, lol. If you are using a chisel, the best way is to put the beveled edgea against the stud, with the flat face towards yourself... the chisel will want to slide along the surface of the stud that way, instead of digging in.
Its time consuming, and dirty work... wear a dust mask

With the tools mentioned so far.Don't know how old house is but make sure lead paint was not used on drywall. If it has, check out all safety precautions for removal such as wearing proper mask, covering exposed items, etc. Good luck.
