hi. i have my first orthodontist apppointment this Friday. I have been doing my fair share of research on everything about braces ever since i heard i had to get them such as what to expect, what spacers are, etc. i came across a tool called a "water pik". i am wondering what exactly this does and what is the cost of this? is is worth it? also, if you can include all personal experience from braces, that would be very appreciated. best answer gets 10 points!!

Thanks in advance :-)

Oddly enough my 16yr was born with an EXTRA tooth that was surgically removed along with its secodary permanent follower. However, my daughters two front middle teeth sit off to the side because she is missing a lateral incisor, baby and permanent both being absent. There is no gap...just her straight teeth not setting centered in her mouth. Does anyone know what the percentages are for each of these conditions and the treatment options for the latter?

I've had my braces for about 7 months. My teeth have gotten more spaced out on the top since I got them an the past three visits my ortho hasn't "tightened" the top wire. Is it just me or is he laying down on the job?

I love her to death BUT my best bud's breath is horrible. I've tried so many times to tell her, but I'm sure she already knows. I've given her prescription gum, mouthwash, toothpaste ect. NOTHING HELPS! I've seen her brush her teeth, use mouthwash, scrape her tongue, and all it does it make her breath smell like MINTY SH**!! Seriously! I've given her breath RX it smells like minty crap. I've given her up to 5 peices of gum and it makes it worse! It's like her mouth is full of bacterial demons! The mints melt in her mouth is 2.5 seconds, and it's nauseating!! If I even inhale when she speaks I choke, she makes the rooms hot, and if it's cold outside her breath eats through the wind & makes it hot and funky. What do I do? I CANT STAND IT ANYYMOOREE! She goes to the dentist all the time too! She has this white chunky discolored tongue. When she talks white meat (I'm guessing) comes out of no where, and when she notices it she eats it again. EWWW! WHAT SHOULD I DO?

I had braces fitted today and a little while ago I brushed my teeth and I got a quick, shooting, sharp pain when brushing one of my molars around the gumline!! I can't see any inflamation or reason for getting this pain - my gums look fine and obviously my teeth are healthy (I have no cavities). The pain is when I hit a particular spot of the tooth. I didn't have any pain when I ate my lunch or drank some water. Why am I get this pain, and will it go away? Did anyone elso experience this pain when they first had their braces fitted?

Is this considered a real discipline by the ADA or any other peer organization? Why does the American Cancer Society say this about "biological dentistry" on their website?

"...clinical studies that have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals found no link between mercury-containing fillings and the development of cancer and other diseases. The amount of mercury absorbed by the body from amalgams is so small it is considered harmless. A study of US dentists found that dentists themselves have higher mercury levels in their bodies than patients with mercury-containing fillings, because of daily exposure at work. However, the dentists showed the same disease patterns as everyone else, and actually outlived non-dentists by about 3 years."

my dentist has offered me two options, get my tooth out, or get root canal treatment. Its a back molar and I don't know whether to just go for it and get it pulled out or give the root canal treatment a go... i've been told that root canal weakens the tooth so i'll eventually have to get a crown and then have to have the tooth removed anyway, so is there any point??

please let me know your thoughts on the subject :o)

I had a tooth extracted on Friday and over the weekend, I had the most excruciating pain- went to the dentist yesterday and he filled the hole with dressing, however this has since came out and I am in agony!!!

He has also given me a prescription of antibiotics and I called him today to see if I could get another dressing and he has told me to persevere with the antibitiotics for another 24 hours-
How long is it going to take for this pain to go away??? I am going to end up overdosing or killing someone!!!!!!!!
