I've had my braces for about 7 months. My teeth have gotten more spaced out on the top since I got them an the past three visits my ortho hasn't "tightened" the top wire. Is it just me or is he laying down on the job?

Trust your orthodontist.

If you're not satisfied with that three word answer, then you should ask the orthodontist yourself why he hasn't done it. Maybe they're supposed to be that way? Maybe he has to wait for some alterations to other teeth before he can rectify that problem? Dentistry is a very tricky thing, but if you just ask him I'm sure he'll give an explanation.
The worst case scenario is that he hasn't noticed it (very unlikely), in which case he should fix you up quickly.

Feel confident. True happiness overtakes a 'worse smile,' anyway.

He needs to explain the entire procedure to you and help you understand what he is doing, why, and for how long. I had braces for 1.5 yrs, and I was told it'd take up to 2.5 yrs, but because I followed his instructions religiously, I got them off early at 12.5 yrs old. At 19, I went back because I was wondering about a permanent retainer on my lower front 4 teeth. The entire staff burst out laughing - it was an oversite!

So, if it seems that the top teeth are being ignored, I would most certainly make sure that there was a GOOD REASON why he was focusing elsewhere for a while. He may have knowledge of needing some area of your mouth to shift naturally before moving to the next step (like maybe you have a wisdom tooth issue, and he is seeing where it is going before moving forward). No matter what, he needs to be forthright and honest and clear with you of what he is doing and why. You don't want to still be going to him 5 yrs from now, do you? Make sure he has a timeframe explained to you and the steps you will need to take to make sure that what he does is most effective.
I had to wear headgear - ugly ugly, but I wore it to school and put up with the teasing because I knew that it was needed for "x" amount of hours per day, and I stuck by it. It paid off by being out of braces way ahead of schedule.
Don't be afraid to ask him a ton of questions - he's being paid for his work, so have him educate you about what this braces thing is all about!

There must be a certain time your ortho tightens the braces where no mishaps would occur. However, if the top portion of your "grill" becomes prominent like David Letterman, go back to the ortho man pronto!

Sometimes the correction is not tightening the teeth, but opening up space for the new teeth to fit in.

My sons mouth was too small and had to have his upper palette expanded for 6 months, then have 6 baby teeth (they wouldn't fall out) to make room for his adult teeth that were in the gums.

It sounds like you need to talk to the Dentist about exactly what he is trying to accomplish for you.

give them time, but if you are really concern talk to your dentist and tell him how you are concern about the spaces, and stop feel self conscious of the way you smile, you probably have a nice smile but don't think you do because of the braces good luck.

don't sweat dude. you are mid process and everything will come together. if there are teeth that need to be rotated a little then you need some space to have enough room for movement. just wait till it's done.

The preliminary cleansing of your teeth could be uncomfortable, quite in case you do not preserve your teeth. in case you do, then it is going to not be something too undesirable. the setting up of the braces is in fact soreness loose. They do it in stages, first they place the bands around the back molars and then they cement the brackets to the the rest teeth. in many circumstances the top teeth are accomplished first then at a later time the backside teeth are "bracketed". the colour is as much as you. in case you do not choose your braces to be seen and you probably did not purchase clean braces then a subdued shade like gray works nicely. The preliminary consultation will final around 30-40 minutes and your teeth would be sore. they'll in all probability propose taking something for the soreness (Tylenol, ibuprofen...) and supply you a listing of issues to not consume. each and each month your braces would be adjusted and this produces aches from the teeth shifting. the biggest soreness generating component of having braces is whilst the cord pokes protrudes out of the band interior the back. which means the teeth are shifting and is unquestionably a solid element. they're going to provide you wax for it, yet will clip this cord on call for. On a scale of a million-10 the soreness of having braces is a few 2... (particularly fastened with a splash ibuprofen nonetheless).

more space between your teeth is good. No food will get stuck, you can stick your blunt between your teeth. Its like having a built in roach clip.
