I had a tooth extracted on Friday and over the weekend, I had the most excruciating pain- went to the dentist yesterday and he filled the hole with dressing, however this has since came out and I am in agony!!!

He has also given me a prescription of antibiotics and I called him today to see if I could get another dressing and he has told me to persevere with the antibitiotics for another 24 hours-
How long is it going to take for this pain to go away??? I am going to end up overdosing or killing someone!!!!!!!!

i would go to another dentist and get the dressing replaced. I don't mean to be judgenmental of your dentist but the aftercare he shows for his patients is horrible!! If you don't get it replaced, about 3-5 days would be the average, then you should just have normal healing pain.

Question:
I have something called a dry socket. I am in constant pain...what can I do for relief? ...Jamie in PA

Answer:
Jamie, you need to return to the dentist who took our your tooth. He/she needs to pack the socket with medication after irrigating it. You also need to be on antibiotics.

The irrigation/packing may need to be done every other day for 2 or 3 times until the pain is gone. If you smoke, you could have pain for a while or until you stop smoking

Question:
I had a molar extracted yesterday and I am in fear of developing a dry socket. How stable are the blood clots that form over the area? Are they easily dislodged? If so, what are the key things to avoid? ...Visitor from CT

Answer:
Dry Sockets are sometimes a real mystery to everyone. We know as you have pointed out, that the blood clot seems to be the key. The blood clot is the cover that protects the bone is it heals. If it become dislodged, then the bone becomes exposed and can be really uncomfortable.

Rules:
1. If you smoke.....do not for at least 24 hours
2. Do not excessively rinse your mouth for a couple of days
3. Keep the area clean by using a very soft brush
4. If you have stitches be sure to return to the dentist to have them removed
5. If you are taking antibiotics, make sure that you complete them
6. If you get a bad taste and pain after a couple of days, you have a dry socket and return to your dentist for treatment.

Question:
I have been diagnosed with dry socket. This is my 13th day following my surgery and I developed dry socket almost in the first week. How long does it usually take to heal and how many dressings are required? Visitor from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Answer:
I am sorry that you are having this trouble.

It is hard to say how long you will be hurting. One thing that definitely has an impact is whether or not you are smoking. You do not mention that but if you do smoke please stop. The healing process will be much quicker.

Sometimes I use one pack for several days and sometimes I pack it daily until things get better. It just depends on what I am looking at. One other question that I would start having at this time-frame is whether or not there is another problem developing in the area.

This is not much help by remote control. Your best bet is to get back with your dentist and ask for their input. I am sure that he or she is a compassionate person and will want to help you get over the problem.

I had one of those once and they are painful! My dentist had me rinsing with salt water 2-3 times a day (after meals) I think it took less then a week. Like I said it's been a long time ago, but if I remember right I'd say it was less then a week. Hope you get feeling better. S:)

It usually takes about 3 or 4 days to a week. I'm sorry you're in pain...maybe yours will heal soon.

Too bad he didn't prescribe some Vicoden. Since he didn't ,take some Motrin(800 mg. for the infllamation) and Tylenol for the pain(you can take 3 500mg caps)

Great answer doctor!!
