Vegetarian & Vegan - October 2007

[Selected]: All categories Food & Drink Vegetarian & Vegan

I am not trying to be mean, I am just very curious because many girls and women I know tend to want meat during or before their cycle begins, myself included.

What cravings do you have now that you are vegetarians? If you are a recent convert, what foods do you find are a good substitute for meat cravings? I usually eat bison steaks around my time because they are full of lean proteins and lots of iron and minerals, and I never have PMS of feel bad or crampy.

I'd like to know if you don't mind, a simple recipe for your favorite craving food? I am willing to try a new thing.

I am surrounded by preachy, evangelistic vegans. However, I come from a farming family, and we raise goats, chickens, hogs, sheep, guineas, and a few cows on top of the many different vegetables and fruits we grow in season. I get tired of people saying I don't care about animals just because I eat meat. Or, that I'd change my mind if I had to see a slaughterhouse. Okay?? I was raised on a farm, and I have seen/helped many animals get slaughtered. Never changed my mind. Plus we treat all our animals well, and with respect. We give thanks for their meat, milk, eggs, skins...as it is our livelihood.

Anyway, I tried being vegatarian 2 weeks just to be fair. I work out a lot (5 days per wk.) and work a strenuous job, plus helping out at home some weekends. I lost so much energy and stamina from cutting out meat. I was pale, and grouchy. I ate plenty of good proteins and vegatable/fruits: (beans, peaches, carrots, spinach, TVP, salads, oranges, tomatoes, avocadoes, flax...etc)...

If you eat conventionally grown food, then you are paying farmers to spray insecticides. This kills thousands of insects, and other animals such as birds. Conventional farming also destroys soil, and all this damages the ecosystem severly. In my opinion, vegans (who are driven by compassion) might think about buying more organic food. What do you think?

your food? It is all about the animals we do not need to enjoy food. Food is a substance and that is it. I think it is a conspiracy started by the evil resturant people. What do you think?

I saw my neighbor come home from fishng the other day and he had over the limit he is suppossed to have. I looked up online how much you are aloud to catch. The website says you can only take home three fish and he had four. Should I report him to the authorities? I have told him before that fishing is immoral and I guess he will not listen.

I have because I thought it was wrong to eat all the innocent animals but then I just told myself "I won't eat innocent animals anymore I'm just going to eat the guilty ones". But really I went vegetarian for a few months. I can't live without chicken or burgers. I need my proteins and I'm not drinking a protein shake.

Daughter is a vegetarian and with my being the main grocery shopper, it falls to me to buy her 'meat free' items. There are three main brands as I see them, Boca, Morningstar Farms and Amy's. I usually buy Boca or MSF as I get coupons for them, but I recently found coupons for Amy's and got a good deal on them as they are usually the most expensive. For the record, which is the best 'tasting' ? Does Amy's really deserve the high ticket price? I am curious, as I don't want to buy things just because they are inexpensive but ends up tasting like caca.

I'm feeling bad about eating meat and I'm not making a definte choice about being vegetarian but if I do become one...do you know the names of animal by-products that they put in makeup so that I know what not to buy? If it comes from an animal that is kept living, it's ok but if the animal has to die for the product to be made-- you see my point, right? I would also like to know which companies allow animal testing. Thanks!

Also, if you know the names of any animal byproduct-free makeup that would be great!

I've had some messages from another user who seems to think that i am not a vegetarian because i can eat sweets that contain gelatine. Apparantly this makes me "a meat eater who cant eat most meats" and i am ruining the "discipline which real vegetarians exhibit"
For the love of God! Can we PLEASE leave all this "veggier than thou" **** at the door!
Yes i can eat gelatine but thats because it DOES NOT TASTE OF MEAT OR SMELL OF MEAT!
Some people give me a damn headache....any views on this?

I have been using a maragrine that I recently found out had something in it from boiling left over animal parts, but it isn't clear in the ingredients. I know that some things can be hidden on labels. What maragrine is okay to use if you want to avoid any animal products?
