sorry I had to thumbs down you to get the obnoxious CAPS off of my screen.

trace-----good idea they should consult their doctors. But would they listen if he said it was harmful? You know, the old lead the horse to water thing.

al l----some good points. But saying that there isn't any evidence, to me, helps make my point. It's no coincidence that the agencies you trust are the ones that you agree with their endorsement. If the USDA didn't endorse it, you would have just omitted it right?

I find it hard to believe that the meat industry is able to pull off a conspiracy such as this. Like you said the amount of vegetarians is small, so I cannot see why it is worth their time. I have read a ton of articles on this since you brought it up and it does appear that unfermented soy is not really good for you if you consume it regularly. It is very hard for the body to break down and digest (ironic huh?) and it can cause a lot of problems ranging from break down of bone density to arthritic problems of the joints.

I would suggest if anyone does consume this on aregular basis to talk to their physician about their diet or a dietician just to be safe.

However, I really do not buy into the whole conspiracy thing. Though people love a good conspiracy theory angle, don't they?

edit- BTW your avatar is up and running again! Too cute!

You mean the studies that say soy makes you grow man-boobs?

I actually eat less soy as a vegetarian than I did before. I don't eat tofu, soy nuts, soy milk, etc. just because I don't like the taste, but soy shows up in all kinds of "real" meat like Jack in the Box tacos and canned chili. I think if there were some sort of crazy side effects, then it would effect the entire population instead of just vegetarians.

I don't really think there is a conspiracy... unless you count the moon landing... total fake... and don't forget the magic bullet that killed Kennedy... while he was talking to the space aliens on a future cell phone that fit inside his ear.

Back in the late 80's to early 90's the information that was put out was found to be from researchers of the American Dairy Association. You mention that the number of vegetarians is small however I don't think you realize that soy is consumed by a number of people who aren't vegetarian. You eat soy sauce with chinese food, soy is in most candy bars, people who are lactose intolorant consume soy products, infants with digestive problems use soy formula, and people with a number of disease use soy to reduce the effects caused by those disease. So while there may only be a small number of vegetarians there is a large number of people who consume soy. Since the information was exposed there has not been any proven research linking soy to any dangers. Of course too much of any good thing is bad so I would agree that a diet strickly based on soy is not good but I don't think anyone does that. Plus, if the American Heart Association, American Diabetes association, USDA, and Arthritics association support soy consumption in moderation then I think they've done their research quite well so I'm willing to trust them.

Conspiracy is just a group of people working together towards an end. Yes, it's usually used in an evil connotation but it isn't neccessarily an evil end.

While I had no idea that the meat industry is reporting that unfermented soy is bad for you, if they are, it's just a marketing conspiracy. Soy is bad.....meat is good...buy more meat.

That being said, unfermented beans are' bad for you. So the meat industry is conspiring to tell the truth in this case.

I've never said that and neither have most of the people on this forum. I don't think you should assume that we all think this. I have not heard enough reputable information to make me believe that it is bad for you, but my mind remains open to the possibility. And whether or not I believe the facts, I still don't think there is any sort of "conspiracy".

If a large number of people do believe this, I imagine it is because the meat and dairy industries are large, multinational, multi-billion dollar corporations. And if anybody is capable/willing to bend the truth a little for PR's sake,it is usually the large corporation rather than the little hippy outfits that make soymilk. But, of course, that is just a generalization.

While we may be a small number, the meat industry fears any rejection of their products. Less meat sold means less money for them. The meat industry is strictly about profit. That's all it is. They do not care about the consumers, about the environment, about anybody but themselves.

They are aware that more people are gearing towards a healthier lifestyle. More people are cutting down on the red meats, reducing their consumption, and buying leaner cuts. That hurts their pockets... so they retaliate by attacking the one industry that is taking their profits and gives biased information. The meat industry has attacked soy products because it's taking its profits. The dairy council has done the same with soy drinks.

Read "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins. There's tons of info in there about the meat industry's deceptive tactics.

Not only vegers consume soy.

Tofu, edamame, and soy milk are not fermented and they are used very widely by people throughout East Asia. Even people that eat meat. Someone that eats meat may even have soy-based mock duck on their table alongside chicken or beef.

Vegetarian food isn't weird hippie **** to them. It's cheaper and healthful.

A much higher percentage of the Asian population is unable to handle dairy well and soy milk is much more common.

The meat industry is evil and I know that there is a conspiracy. My vegan alien friends let me in on it. There is a chapter in my new book on this. EAT SOY!

You are still THE MOST IMMORAL TROLL EVER!

I can't say for sure that it's a conspiracy.

But I haven't seen any credible evidence that all this stuff is true.

My dietian wife isn't taking it seriously and that's good enough for me.
