I am not trying to be mean, I am just very curious because many girls and women I know tend to want meat during or before their cycle begins, myself included.

What cravings do you have now that you are vegetarians? If you are a recent convert, what foods do you find are a good substitute for meat cravings? I usually eat bison steaks around my time because they are full of lean proteins and lots of iron and minerals, and I never have PMS of feel bad or crampy.

I'd like to know if you don't mind, a simple recipe for your favorite craving food? I am willing to try a new thing.

well, i've never ate meat in my whole life... but i eat a lot of morning star immitation meats, etc. now since i've never had ground beef, bacon, or hot dogs, i dont know how close they come to the real thing, but every non-veggie that i get to try them falls in love. my recommendation would to be to mix them with a favorite food of yours. i like tortilla chips with the immitation ground beef, salsa, lettuce, and veggie cheese ( or the real deal depending on your preference). i consume big plates of this when i'm feelin crampy and crabby. hahaha

I've been veg*n for almost 21 years and I have never had a craving for red meat during my period or at any other time. I don't get any sort of PMS symptoms and I've only had cramps once in my life (before I went veg.) I think if you're having those cravings you are probably iron deficient and need to look into other sources of iron on a daily basis.

I wonder if that's because you crave meat or the iron in meat ( since we lose some when we have our monthly), so it's your body's way of getting ready? I don't crave meat ( I'm vegetarian) that time of the month, but I usually don't like sweets, but I will crave them then. What I'll usually make is a grilled fluffer-nutter. Butter bread like you're going to make a grilled cheese, but put crunchy peanut butter and mini marshmallows in it. Use a fork to kind of seal up the edges of the bread a little, then cook like you would a grilled cheese sandwich. It takes care of the craving, but isn't as bad for you as eating a pint of Ben & Jerry's!

Usually I don't want to eat or cook anything, but once in a while, I desperately want dark, bitter chocolate. I just run down the street and buy a tiny bit of the good stuff and it satisfies my craving.

I actually have less PMS than when I ate meat. I've discovered that eating greasy and high-dairy food during the month tends to give me PMS. I'm pretty sure, from my friends' and my own experiences, that everyone has to figure out what their own triggers are.

One thing my boyfriend makes me a lot is stir-fried mustard greens or baby bok choy, since it's got lots of fibre and iron.

- Wash three or four cups of baby bok choy or mustard greens. Break up the bok choy or break the greens in half so they're easier to eat.
- Heat up a wok with a teaspoon of olive or canola oil. Throw in a half tablespoon of minced garlic.
- Throw in the greens, toss it around the pan until they're slightly wilted, the leaves are shiny, but the stems are still crisp.
- Drain off excess water, and serve with oyster sauce to dip each leaf in. It's actually super, super delicious - I was so surprised , since it's basically leaves.

Logic dictates that someone who has never eaten meat would not crave it. So it's only a psychological thing. You may want to increase your Vitamin C, legume & nut intake to increase your iron absorption.
