This was spurred by 'EducatedWoman's question. G.E has a lot of potential to do good if it is done right. It can reduce the use of pesticides, use of animal products, and it can improve nutritional quality. If we truly care about the environment, and about animals, how does it make sense to completely shoot down G.E instead of analyzing it on a case by case basis?

Besides, every grain, fruit and vegetable we eat today is palatable because of G.E. Early farmers were all genetic engineers. They changed the genetic stocks of plants and animals by selecting for superior quality. That means they tampered with nature, using nature's own methods. The only difference is that artificial methods can be used today, but it doesn't mean it's automatically bad.

G.E has been much maligned by the media. 99% of the time, G.E food is better for you than something treated with a gazillion pesticides. As for organic food, that's treated with fish meal, blood and bone. Who wants that?

I know that some tend cattle and only drink the milk and the blood, but don't usually kill.

I am a vegeterian. I want to be a vegan, but I don't know if I can follow through with it, and I don't think anyone would be supportive. What do you suggest?

Most of the time, when I eat meat, I feel disgusting...like I can imagine the animal's pain and it makes me feel gross and nauseous...Please help! My parents think I won't get enough iron and other nutrients if I'm a vegetarian. My older sister tried out being a vegetarian when she was 15 (she's 16 now), but she couldn't continue because she wasn't getting enough nutrients. My parents think I'm going to be like her, and not get enough nutrients, so how can I convince them? They think not enough nutrients equals a stunt in my growth. By the way, my family doesn't have much meat as it is (just two times a week, or three at the most), but I really would like to make it NO meat at all. I've already promised them that I would eat plenty of beans, yogurt, eggs, peanut butter, etc. to get enough protein. What are your opinions? Please help! Thanks ;]

Lest unethical if you want to look at it the other way.

I became a vegetarian about 2 weeks ago!
I've stuck to it very well for being apart of a Hispanic family that eats chicken at least 3 times a day!
I've purchased all of my health food, and the necessary vitamins!
I have a pretty basic diet! but I would like to explore more, with vegetarian meals.
I'm a bit scared of Tofu, but if I made it, how would I make it!
What do you suggest I add to my diet , that's healthy, vegetarian, and taste good!

This was on the Yahoo! home page.

More young people go the vegetarian route:
http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-10-14-veggie-kids_N.htm

I think the most interesting part of the article was this:
About 3% of adults are vegetarians, says Reed Mangels, nutrition adviser for the Vegetarian Research Group, in Baltimore. But she says as many as 10% of adults consider themselves vegetarians, even though they may eat fish or chicken occasionally.

This basically means the majority of people claiming to be vegetarians... aren't (a 70-30 split by these figures).

... and...
Kaayla Daniel [...] says, "I do think children will grow better on a high-quality omnivorous diet." The mother of two meat-eating children says human teeth and digestive systems prove we were designed to eat both animal and vegetable foods.

Kind of seems like one big backhanded complement to me.

Your thoughts?

Is there any definite proof that (specifically) soy burgers and other soy products are safe to eat, no matter what age you are? I've been hearing stories about soy products, but have been buying soy products for years. What is the real truth? What are some good soy- alternatives for vegetarian foods? Thanks

I have been thinking about becoming a vegaterian for a couple of years now but it is really personal after being forced to go into a slaughter house in Costa Rica over the summer while on a school trip.

I have been holding out because I don't like a whole lot of veggies. Can you email me some recipies that you eat on a regular basis so I can try them for a week or two and see how it goes?

Also my family loves having family dinner about twice a week. They know I have problems with most meat (I don't eat meat if it has a bone in it and I try to only eat organic) but how to I tell them that I am a vegetarian? they know I am thinking about it but I don't want my brother (an avid hunter) to make my life miserable. Also I am married and I don't want to force my openions on my husband (he is a great guy and would not be mad at any discision I would make). has anyone else delt with this? I don't want to make two meals every night. How do I ballance all of this? Any help would be great!
