They have feelings for sure. I'm a sheep farmer, on with lambing at the moment and the ewes that have given birth most certainly show feelings to their lambs. Yes it is instinct but the emotion (for want of a better word) is definitely there. As someone else said, animals eat animals, and we are animals.... It is personal choice whether we eat the flesh of animals, for some people the idea is abhorrent, which is fine, to others it is perfectly acceptable, which is also fine. And yes in this modern world it is a fact that many animals are only here to be eaten.

If we needed meat wouldn't all of the vegetarians have died by now? You don't need meat, you want it. You continue to eat meat because of the taste, not because you will die without it.

Even if you don't like to think of animals being slaughtered, turning away does not make it disappear. Your actions speak louder than words. Every time you buy meat, you are creating the demand for it, and therefore creating the order for another animal to be slaughtered.

I don't think I've had a salad since I became a vegetarian.

What's wrong is that biologically you are not meant to eat it. Your digestive tract strains itself for days trying to break down the matter which in turn lowers your immune system. Furthermore it acts as a barrier in your digestive tract and limits the chemical linning from gaining access to foods you consume which causes you to loose nutrients. So, really it does not nourish you it prevents other foods from nouishing you. There is nothing in meat that you can't get from another source (and no you don't need to take vitamin suppliments.) You don't need meat you just want it and there is a big difference.

And to clarify what bob d said below not everyones ancestors raised animals for meat. The term meat comes from the old English word meating food which refers to all food. The nobles were the only ones who ate flesh because they were the only ones who could afford flesh or the resources to hunt. Eventually as meat became more affordable people, like people do, tried to live like the nobles and ate more meat. Eventually meat became the stapple food for nobles and middle class and the term meat slowly changed to animal flesh. I actually have a documented report from my ancestry dating seven generations back when a woman in my family first had a meal with vinison. She took one bite and was disgusted and couldn't eat anymore.

No, I don't think animals are meant to be eaten. I think they are meant to be animals.

You don't NEED meat and if you cared in the slightest, you'd know that vegetarians eat lots of great food besides "salad without chicken." Nobody needs meat, they eat it because their cultural programming and inate selfishness trump their compassion for animals. You say you don't like the idea of meat, but you've convinced yourself that you "need" it because that's so much easier than really confronting your principles.

couple of corrections for you

You don't "need" meat. Just admit you CHOOSE to eat it becasue you care more about your taste buds that the animal that died. Once you admit that you life will be far more content and less based on lies. Eat as much meat as you liek but please don't hide behind the "I need meat" thing, its false.

You can't say you love animals and then pretend its ok to kill them when they don't need to die, that would be hypocritical.

You say you "don't like to think of animals being slaughtered"

Thats the whole problem, you will not even think about it so will not even think about if its wrong.

Perhaps you are afraid of facing the truth of what you pay for when you buy your meat ?

Last night I had goats cheese and roasted pepper tartlets followed by stilton and mushroom bake with steamed vegetables and boiled potatoes. Not a bit of salad in sight.

I personally don't think that they are supposed to be eaten unless...it was absolutly nessecary...but to this date I haven't even found one good situation for eating meat to be nessecary..but...

There is nothing wrong with you not wanting to be a vegetarian...or you just can't stop eating meat to be one. That's okay. We are all different...that is the most beautiful part about life...take that away and life seems to loose alot of it's luster. Ya know.

By the way though...you don't need meat you know that right. If that were so vegetarianism wouldn't exist. That would be comparable to dening ourselves of drinking water...and it isn't. We need water...we don't need meat. You like meat and choose to include it for whatever reason.

well you dont "need" meat the same way you dont need to wear fur. its just wanting gradification for yourself without thinking about the consequences for others as well as yourself. dont try to pass it off as something your just gonna die without! grow up. and if you think meat is nourishing...well...maybe you should try doing some research on "whats wrong with that" theres no information lacking on that topic

If you want to eat meat then that's fine but please don't excuse yourself by saying you 'need' meat. There are millions of vegetarians in the world that are healthier than meat-eaters... nearly the whole of India for example don't eat meat as well as millions of Buddhists around the world. Health insurance companies in the UK are now offering discounts to vegetarians because we're generally healthier and live longer than meat eaters.

You eat meat because of convenience and your tastebuds. It's out of pure self-interest. I recognized this when I used to eat meat... thankfully I then had a change of heart and didn't want to gain pleasure from pain so gave up meat. If you still want to do so then that's fine but please don't fool yourself into thinking you 'need' meat because your body would actually be better of without it.

You don't need meat. You want it, pure and simple, and your 'want' has overcome any scruples you have against doing so.

People try to excuse themselves by saying we're "meant" to eat meat, but there's no "meant" to it. We have a choice. You can get all the nutrition you need from non-meat sources, and you can enjoy it too. You'll also be more healthy, not to mention all the benefit to the animals and our environment, but that's a choice you have to make for yourself.

I would agree with Courtney B . . . animals weren't "meant" to be eaten, or we would be eating all animals. Eating certain animals for meat is culturally/geographically/climatically conditioned as are certain cultures that are primarily vegetarian. Here in the US and most of Europe we don't eat dogs. They do in other cultures. Some cultures have to eat meat ... the Inuits for example eat massive amounts of meat. They live to be quite old. Plants don't grow well in subarctic conditions.
