I think it's fantastic that you want to go vegan. My advice is to start by going vegetarian. And you can do that gradually if you want.

Instead of spaghetti with meat sauce, for example, get marinara sauce. Try veggie burgers and soy "chicken" patties. Research it. Here are two great Web sites:

VeganOutreach.com
CompassionateCooks.com (listen to the Podcasts)

Read about the health aspects of a veg diet. I went veg because of my love for animals, but I am so glad I did because of how healthy it is. (You'll have a lower risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, some types of cancer.)

Good luck! (And don't let the anti-veg people deter you.)

I tried to become a vegan once too. I was a "vegan" for about a month and a 1/2. I did this because I thought it would be cool. I realized that if I eat meat I will always eat meat. The only tips I have is you have to really want to become a vegan and not give up like I did.

if you're only concerned for your health, you don't need to go vegan. That would involve reading the ingredients on every single item you ever bought, including household cleaning and laundry, personal toilletries and clothing to make sure none of it involved animal products or by-products. If you want to eat healthy cut out meat dairy and eggs and eat veg and fruit, nuts and seeds, various beans, lentils and other legumes, soy milk/yoghurt/cheese, tofu, fake meat products, quinoa, brown rice, corn oats, sweeet potatoes, wholemeal bread and pasta. It's all low fat and cholesterol free. search the net for interesting recipies to try and before long it'll be easy just to chuck a load of veggie ingredients into a pan and rustle up a tasty meal. I invent meals as I go along and havent had too many diasters..just don't ever put parsnips in thai food! I learned that lesson a couple of weeks ago.

Go slow. I am starting my vegetarian life. Start with cutting out beef and pork for a month. Next cut out chicken and turkey for a month the next month cut out fish the next eggs and finally milk. If you do it slowly your body will adapt easier and you can put together your cupboard and use what is there without having to through stuff out. I still have some fish in my diet as well as eggs and milk. I didn't have to cut out red meats as I didn't eat them before. Just make sure that you eat lots of dark leafy greens and peas to keep your iron up! also look for things like bocca burgers and other meatless products. Good luck!

Veganism is a lifestyle, not just what you eat. Vegans don’t wear leather, fur, or wool, buy products from companies that conduct non-required animal toxicity tests:

Or frequent zoos, rodeos, circuses, or other places where animals are held in captivity or forced to perform.

It's great that you want to become healthier, but inderstand that if you only change your diet, you're not a vegan, you're vegetarian.

Congrats on your decision!

Go to a nice restaurant, order a good steak and a bottle of good red wine.

Sip the wine and relax until this silly vegan idea passes.
