The main influence to my vegetarianism is due to PETA. They are a great organization that actually fights for something they don't personally benefit from. They are not an cancer organization where their members personally have cancer, therefore a vested interest. These people can easily get into issues that directly benefit them, but they choose to look into animal rights issues. They can easily choose to live in blissful ignorance, but they don't.
On the other hand, there has never been a person or organization that has not been hypocritical or flawed. PETA has it's flaws and hypocricies. I am sure animal rights people are more aware of them than the typical meat-eating PETA hater.
PETA is not just a radical, noisy group all the time. The organization actually does things nice and formally many times. The problem is that most people take animal rights as a joke therefore, different approaches are necessary depending on the situation. They care more for animals than their image. This can sometimes be problematic though.
It's important to remember that PETA is crucial to the animal rights movement, but is not THE animal rights movement. You can easily distance yourself from them and still be an animal rights advocate and vegan.
They are a very good resource, but you don't have to be all wrapped up with them to make a difference.

PETA is actually the reason that I am Vegan however they didn't scare me in to it because I wanted to be a true environmentalist. However PETA did open my eyes to how animals are being treated and I've never liked for animals to suffer just so I can eat when we have so much more out there. PETA has great websites and lots of information for anyone who wants to make the right choice and actually know why, not just because they are saying you should.
I think it's great there are actually doing something to try to improve the wellness of animals and they even have a myspace.

I'm a vegetarian... and I hate PETA. I think more non-veg people support PETA than vegetarians... weird. I think it's that way because vegetarians actually pay attention to what PETA does (since most people think all vegetarians are members of PETA), and most non-veg folks think "I like puppies... I'll send PETA $20".
Watch this for an entertaining explaination of the real PETA:

What is the whole point of PETA anyway, all it is, is a bunch of people trying to turn away from what we were ment to eat and do with animals, they were all put on this earth for our use and consumption. If they don't get that through thier thick skull they have a LOT of problems. All animals were put here for our desire and testing is a good way to figure out thigs before we use it, why not kill a monkey or 2 if it will save the lives of thousands of humans, they don't have feelings, all they are is a thing put on this earth for us to use....

When people are attacked they become defensive. It seems to me that the veg ideal is right in and of itself and requires no violent push.
In the long run, Peta has hurt the veg movement just as the vigilant abortion folks (both sides) have hurt their own ideals.
It surprises me that more people can't control their emotions enough to see this and it's unfortunate to everyone. Then again, maybe most people do' see this and their quiet, rational support is overrode by the noise of the minority emotional fringe.

Yes. It's has made me realize that there is a whole new level of idiocy in the world I never thought could have existed. Then you hear a PETA member speak or see a rally on TV and you just stare in awe at the foolishness.

Yes, it makes me look at the whole animal rights movement in a bad light. The people who run PETA may care for animals but they go about in such way that makes one distrust them

I strongly dislike PETA.. I'm active in rescue and try to eat less meat, but I detest PETA. Anyone I know who has become active in PETA has become utterly incapable of reasoning. I have no problem with vegetarianism as a choice for people. I can understand it and respect it. I just can't respect PETA..
Peta is anti-zoo, even zoo's that are active in conservation efforts
http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=67
They're against keeping aquarium fish
http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=30
Here they tell you to give your pet black walnut shell capsules instead of using flea control like Frontline
http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=136
They are against keeping pet birds
http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=32
They are against TNR
http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=120
They also recommend making your dog and cat vegetarians too..
http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=34
That's enough for me to know they're crazy as can be. When they actually believe that your carnivorous cat or dog should be forced into a lifestyle you chose that goes contrary to their nature.
They also support banning pitbulls and eradicating them.

Not my kind of organization..
