I can record live tv onto my dvd recorder, unlike the cd burner on my computer, which converts files and then burns to the disc...is there a way to, say, hook up the dvd recorder or a cd recorder to my stereo and record cassettes to cd, or live feed to cd?

I have electric smoke detectors with battery backup. They started beeping a few days ago so I went out and purchased all new batteries to replace the old ones. They still beep. It's not a constant beep....about every 30 seconds or so. I even used a vacum to make sure that there was no dust on the sensors. They are only a year old so it's not that they are old. I'm at a loss. Can anyone help before I go crazy!!!!!!! Thanks!

Me and my roommate want to watch sporting events and stuff, but we don't have TVs in our rooms. What would be the best way to be able to watch TV on our PC's? We do have access to TV's that we could put a slingbox-type device on, however we don't want to be forced to watch the same thing that they're watching on the host TV or force the host TV to watch what we're watching. Any suggestions?

I've only seen one but I don't like how it sounds or the way it works. So please to mention the alarm clock which shoots a little flying device into the air and doesn't stop until you stick it back on.

I'm trying to decide which medium to low end receiver to buy for my (6.1 or 7.1) home theater set up. I have the speakers (8 ohm) and a passive subwoofer (4 ohms) but don't know why one would use a crossover switch. Thanks.

The previous answer was great if I had a clue which I don't since I am new to this. How does a newbie (me) do the following that "DA" generously told me to do?:

"It will actually depend on the length of the cable. If it's a cable installed in a building, you'd have to use a specialized testers for that or use a multimeter to measure the capacitance between two of the conductors (use a pair if the conductors are twisted pairs). If you have a pair of conductors that is known to run the full known length, measure its capacitance. Then divide the capacitance of the pair in question by the capacitance of the full length pair and multiply that by the length of the full pair. This will be the approximate length to the break from the end you are measuring from.
If there is no good pair of conductors, lookup the standard capacitance per length unit. Then just divide the measured capacitance by the standard capacitance - it will be your length."
