A regular DVD holds about 4gb of data. Thats plenty of room for a standard digital movie. However more and more people our purchasing High Definition (HD) tv. HDTV's have much crisper images and sound. An SDTV has a resolution of about 480p while an HDTV can have up to a 1080p. If you want to watch a movie in that format you have to purchase a next-generation dvd player. You just cant fit the movie on a regular disc. A blu-ray disc can hold up to about 50gb of data! That opens the door for better computer storage too! Right now there is a format war going on between Sony Blu-Ray and Toshiba HD-DVD. Sorta like VHS vs. Betamax. Blu-Ray has more movies out and has a lot of support from the film industry. The one downside to Blu-Ray is it cost more. Toshiba HD-DVD is cheaper and has few studios backing it. It can only hold about 32gb of data.

All in all I prefer Blu-Ray. You may pay more but it is a better format. At the moment prices are high but they will come down. If you dont have an HDTV (a flat screen/widescreen tv) dont bother buying a next-gen DVD player.

One last note: The Sony PS3 has a Blu-Ray player built in so they can make really amazing games. This also means that everyone who buys the PS3 can watch Blu-Ray movies. I dont have exact numbers but serveral million PS3 have been sold. While only several hundred thousand stand-alone Blu-Ray players have been sold. If you look at it that way, there are many more people with Blu-Ray than HD-DVD

The main difference is how much it can hold per layer. DVD is 4.6GB, HD-DVD is 15GB, and Blu-Ray is 25GB. So it can hold more, what that means for us is higher quality sound, prettier pictures since it is recorded in HD resolution, and more extras. Now if you are like me you probly rarely watch the extras, but the sound and video is very important. Between that and Blu-Ray has I think 8 or 9 supporting movie studios vs. HD-DVD has 3 (2 of which also support Blu). If you don't have an HDTV yet then there is no dramtic need for a Blu Player but if you do and the movies you like are on blu then maybe being blu isn't so bad.

A Blu-ray disc is encoded with a much higher picture quality than a standard DVD. (It is like High-definition TV vs. regular TV) A Blu-ray disc only plays in Blu-ray players but a regular DVD will also play in Blu-ray players. It is called backwards compatibility. Just like a Playstation 3 disc will only play in a PS3, but a Playstation 2 disc that is older will play in a PS2 or a newer PS3.

the good thing about blue ray disk is the quality of the picture.
it is HD 1080p.
If u don't have an HD 1080p tv set than u don't get anything more than playing a DVD on a good DVD player.

the fact that it holds so much data allows it to handle the HD content because any normal movie recorded in HD requires a lot of data to yield 1080p resolution. But holding that much data is not the good thing about it.
