I can record live tv onto my dvd recorder, unlike the cd burner on my computer, which converts files and then burns to the disc...is there a way to, say, hook up the dvd recorder or a cd recorder to my stereo and record cassettes to cd, or live feed to cd?

Check your user manual if it allows music-only recording to a CD.

The problem in real-time recording of music is that the audio bit rate is far lower than the recording speed of modern writers, which means you need to buffer the data, otherwise you have not enough data to write and you get a buffer underflow error.

This is easy to manage if you have a hard-drive (say DVD recorder combo, or PC), but without a hard-drive you may not have enough memory for buffering.

Get yourself a set of DIN leads or equivalent. Use the DIN input on the back or front of your DVD Recorder and take the output from your stereo.
Your local electrical shop should be able to help, but which specific lead will depend on the stereo system you have.
Many stereo systems don't have DIN output, but will allow you to plug in via the headphone socket. Just make sure the volume is turned DOWN low when you try it this way.
Don't use the speaker output, this will blow the circuits inside the DVD Recorder.
Personally I have recorded from my stereo to my PC, edited the files, then burnt them to CD. Recording straight to the DVD Recorder takes away this control, leaving you with a long recording to go through to get to the piece you want to listen to and also less ability to trim them unwanted bits at either end.
