Software - December 2007

I caught a virus that turns out, has no fix yet. The guy I took it to says he's seeing more and more of it and that so far, he does't know of any fix for it but to back up your files and restore your hard drive (I guess it'll get rid of the virus along with everything else). It's a virus that locks you out of your control panel so you don't have access to any of your settings. Now, he'll charge me $200 to do this. He told me it's something I can do myself, but I don't know how. Anyone know where I can get step by step instructions on how to do this? I can't afford the charge and really can't be without my computer.

lets say i downloaded something like ubuntu.. and i need to to boot up when i restart my computer.. what's the best software to do this with.. (maybe besides nero) & how do i do it with that software step by step..

I have Nero StartSmart 6.6.1.6. And i do not know how to burn a movie.Can i burn it with nero startsmart or i have to buy an additional software?If yes, what are some free and good softwares to burn?And also can my xbox 360 play movie on a burned dvd-r?Thank you.

I have a G4 Mac, OS X and I'm attempting to download Windows Media Player. I downloaded it but when I went to click on it on my desk top it said "There is no default application specified to open the application "Windows Media-1.sitz". The thing is, that usually means you can't open it because I've never been successful choosing an application to open another application.

What do I do? How do I download it? Anyone know?

I'd like to find a good free CD burning program which is easy to use. Something where I can move songs around easily on the list etc, easier than Media Player. Hopefully something which doesn't expire as a trial.

If you could provide a link that would be very helpful.

Version 7 of IE uses way to much memory for my slow computer.
I want to know if it is unsafe to use an older version of IE or Mozilla. All I want is the tab feature, but IE7 is very slow for some reason.

It says my Product Key has exceeded the amount of times it can be used...WTF!! Then they say I can BUY either a new operating system, or BUY a new Product Key which is as much or MORE than the system itself!! What kind of crap is this!! I'm gonna call the phone number it gives, but anyone have any ideas? Will they give me a new Key for FREE, or do I need to BUY one every time I wipe my hard drive??

My computer's running on Windows Vista and I have to present a power point tomorrow in my Psychology class. I'm putting the file on a CD-rom and opening it up on the computer in my class. My question is if there are going to be any complications opening my powerpoint that was made on the new version of Microsoft powerpoint onto a computer running on Windows 98... although it may be Windows 2000, I'm not sure.

I'm getting Photoshop Elements 6.0 for Christmas, my parents already bought it for me. It's pretty new, and people probably know the previous version, 5, better. Anyways, I'm an artist, drawing as a hobby, and I want to know if this is good for digital art. My computer crashed yesterday and I used system restore to fix the issue. The problem was that this being my entertainment computer, ALL of my files are gone, as are the programs, I am going to reinstall itunes, but the fear I have is that the very rare songs I have on my ipod now, will vanish the second I connect it to the reinstalled itunes and I will have to really start all over. What can I do to prevent this, or am I fearing over nothing.

I had limewire pro but deleted it because it stopped connecting. I would leave it or hours..and nothing! So I downloaded and installed the normal one and its doin the same thing. Ive tried turning off my firewall but it doesnt make a difference. My internet connection is fine and I dont know whats wrong with it! ..helpp!

i recently reinstalled my operating system (Dell, XP Media Center) and ever since i have been having trouble with Firefox. It will not let me install any themes or add ons, and the one theme that somehow manged to get installed will not show up. it just remains the default theme, and i can not uninstall my extra theme (aquatint black)
I've been trying to completely uninstall it, but i cant seem to manage it! i've tried reinstalling it.
does anyone have any suggestions?

When I try to play videos from the news on puter or e-mail video which have been sent to me , they start then stop, start pause for a long time, then start again. Same with music. Do I have download something to fix this? Also some of my e-mail pics do not download.
