56K? wow wish I could be that lucky. lol. I live in the boonies. No cable, only way to get high speed is wireless satellite if I want to pay the outrageous monthly fees. 26.8 k is the fastest I can get on. Usually its 21.6k... like right now. Some of the answers are right... download large files when you go to bed. I use free download manager and set it to turn off, disconnect, and shut down the pc after the download is completed. There is a code you can set in your dialup connections to keep the line connected if you get a call. Mine is *70 but check with your phone company. hope this helps.

Started out with dialup. Got cut off several times in the middle of a download. Dialup is slow and there's not much you can do about it except free as much memory as possible before attempting a download. If that doesn't work, you will have to go for a better service - which is why I went cable.

You can't really download fast with dial up. It's just impossible, you need to upgrade to at least DSL, even if someone is sharing at really high speeds, it wont help you...

Download over night is best recommended for 56k, so set your downloading before you go to sleep. Also anyone calling your land line will disconnect you, so better to download late at night.

The fastest way is to go to your local cable providers website and sign up for fast internet. Other then that, you get what you get.
