I caught a virus that turns out, has no fix yet. The guy I took it to says he's seeing more and more of it and that so far, he does't know of any fix for it but to back up your files and restore your hard drive (I guess it'll get rid of the virus along with everything else). It's a virus that locks you out of your control panel so you don't have access to any of your settings. Now, he'll charge me $200 to do this. He told me it's something I can do myself, but I don't know how. Anyone know where I can get step by step instructions on how to do this? I can't afford the charge and really can't be without my computer.

I've tried the online scanners. This virus has locked me out of everything. I can't modify anything, install or uninstall anything.

windows xp and he didn't say the name of it. he said you can't get in to do registry tweaks. he put a disk of his in and tried himself, with me watching. he was part of the geek squad at best buy if that helps. haha.

I can't find out any info on it... He said it's new and he doesn't know how to fix it yet. I can't install any sort of spyware on my comp... All I know about it is that it keeps popping up and telling me that I need to install spyware and "click here!!!!" to install it. This pops up every 30 seconds or so in a "windows alert" on the bottom left of the screen, and that I'm completely locked out of anything having to do with the control panel and installing/uninstalling programs. I'm trying to install an anti-spyware program, but I have to uninstall my old one (that won't work or update) but the computer won't let me do anything. It keeps saying my settings are locked and to "contact my administrator."

Do you have windows xp or vista? i need to know that first to help you. go to the link below if you have xp, and click on perform a clean install, it may look complicated but after you do it once it is easy and will save you those $ i am no genius but i have reinstalled xp a lot of times on my own computer, make sure you have all your disks.

Looks like some registry tweak to me, rather than the virus. Did this guy tell you which virus? Most AV vendors will post solutions to viruses within 24 to 72 hours from the detection, so I would say this guy is trying to swindle you.
I suggest ask him which virus it is and the do some research on the internet on the virus. Also, connect with a reliable company for the fix. I really doubt this is a virus

be careful on back-uping ur files. Some viruses will hide in folders and get into the backed-up media such as CD or DVD. After a clear install, when u restore ur songs, videos,.. from the CDs obviously the virus's also will..

He told you to backup your files .... and if the virus is lurking in one of those files and you open it once you have rebuilt your PC what happens then? ....sounds to me that he just doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to removing this problem ... a little more information on what sort of virus it is may help ... if you know the name of it Symantec is a good place to look for manual removal ... or Trend Micro (PCcillin)

First you will need the windows disc that came with the computer or need to buy one.. unless you use lynux you can just burn that onto a CD and use it.. or unless you still have a floppy drive then can make a boot disc.. anyways..
insert the disc, f8, then look for 'boot from disc' and it should be pretty easy from there

some systems with "restore" CD's do NOT work with new HDD's that do not have the original OS installed on them. They were only intended to repair/re-install from the original hard drive with the OS already installed.

when your harddrive is in your computer you open my computer right on the harddrive and click format and it will delete everything from it but if you can take to stuff of (documents,pictures etc) and put them on cd or a dvd

some anti virus programs such as Norton, if they can't fix a virus, will quarantine it so it cannot harm your computer.
