The worst is any Microsoft platform. The best was PC-DOS, the best that will run modern PC's is Corel Linux, and second best would be Windows XP Pro SP2.

If it was made by Microsoft, it is in a tie for first place in the "worst" category.

There is a operating system called OpenVMS, now owned by HP, that runs on IA64 architectures. HP Itanium chips can run it. IBM Xeon blade servers can run it if they are based on the IA64 design. A 32-bit-only PC cannot.

While OpenVMS is more like UNIX than Windows, it is more secure than either of them. OpenVMS won the prize at DefCon 9 (hacker convention) for the hardest system to crack. (You can Google it on the web so I'll leave out details.)

It is a mature operating system, having been around on other architectures for 30 years. But because it is more of a college-level O/S (as opposed to home-level), it is rare to find it in the average home.

Worst: Windows Vista, with Windows 1.0/2.0 tying for second place. One can only imagine how hard Microsoft will try to screw over its loyal customers in Windows 7.0.

Best: OS X v10.4 Tiger, with v10.5 Leopard likely to usurp its position once third-party developers start really taking advantage of Leopard's under-the-hood enhancements.
