Software - November 2007

I'm a serious newbie with linux, and I have no idea how to install something that is .tar.gz .

NO BIASED AWNSERS!!!

I know Vista cannot run a lot of the programs XP can, but if they are officialy discontinnuing XP, that means it will start to decline. Now I know that Vista can get over-complicated (or so says my dad) but NOBODY IS MAKING ANY GOOD PROGRAMS FOR IT! And most all of my current programs are XP only. I'm getting a new computer and I need to know,

XP or Vista?

I need to email a large pdf file. I cannot use file sharing sites as it has some personal info.
I split a pdf file in 2 using acrobat 5.0. Both the resulting file has the same original size, not half of it? I tried compressing it but it doesnt help.

it says "send error report" and I do and there isn't any change....it's only windows media player...quicktime and realplayer are fine....and I tried reinstalling...and still no change...what can I do?

I want to make a trailer for a movie im gona make on youtube. So i was wondering is there anywhere i can just type something in and then it will make a sound file with a person or robot saying that? Hey guys, heres my situation, my friend wated to help me speed up my laptop and make it more like new so he saved everything on my harddrive to my external harddrives and formatted my Laptop....

So unfortunatel w both gforgot about all my bookmarks which I had accumulated over three years on both my internet explorer and firefox.

Is there anyway I can ge them back? I have yet to reinstall firefox and the intrnet explorer version I have is the updated version from before....Is there anything that can be dne to salvage the bookmarks?

Everytime I hit enter, there's a line break.
My text that's double spaced has double the line break between paragraphs.
How can I get it so the lines are single spaced?
I've tried changing the line spacing under format, paragraph but that doesn't help it.
What's wrong? How can I fix it?

I have an Acer Aspire 5570Z laptop. It runs Vista. I want to upgrade to Linux but my understanding is that I'll have to find all the drivers firsthand. Not quite sure where to look for that. Also, when installing Ubuntu 7.10 over Vista do I have o uninstall Vista beforehand? What kind of things do I have to worry about while doing this?

Well Windows xp fails to perform yet again, I have been blessed with the Welcome screen not showing ANY user names lol weird? i know. i have never seen this, i used MINI PE to see the files, they do show , it shows the docs and settings of the users, but nothing appears to show up when I goto boot into widnows and load the user ( just shows that screen where you click on the user names that should be there. Any ideas?

Using a loop, I'm trying to copy and paste the entire row of Cells with true statement to another worksheet


it's simple to just record and throw in an "if" statment and a loop. I'm running about 30,000 lines. I also want to copy all true statement all at once. And paste them ALL AT ONCE, if possible

Hello! I wonder if anyone can help me with a Mac query. Apologies if this is something really obvious, but I am not experienced with Macs at all. It's my boyfriend's Powerbook I'm having a problem with. A lot of websites (such as Youtube, etc) are saying we no longer have the right Flash plug-in. Until recently we had no problem watching things on Youtube etc but now the same message comes up in both Safari and Internet Explorer: "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player". I have downloaded and installed the Flash update several times but it still doesn't seem to be working. When I go to the site again I get the same message. I have checked and JavaScript is turned on. Can anyone help? Thanking you in advance...
