Why would you not use the GUI installer? It's much easier to use.

Get Ubuntu here:

The reason one would want the text only install would be for a guy like me. I've been trying to install ANY Linux on an old Quad PPro 200 Compaq Proliant 5000 server for about 6 months now.

I was lucky enough to find a reference to installing 6.06 on that machine tonight. It works, but the graphical installer is VERY slow on these old machines and on top of that the default kernel is not SMP so it goes really slow even with 512 meg of ram available.

I think I am definitely going back to dowload the alternate text based installer cd and give that a go too.

remember to include

memmap=496M@16M noprobe acpi=off nousb

as kernel params, and also use Compaq SmartStart 5.50 to set your OS type to Windows 2000 (Other sources say otherwise, but this is the only setting that got Ubuntu 6.06 running)

Download the alternate text-based installer image (ISO file) and burn the CD.

Insert the CD and verify that your system BIOS is configured to boot from the CD-ROM drive first. If not press (usually) F2 or 'del' key when the computer is booting and going through the Power On Self Test (POST).

Once you boot from the text-based CD-ROM installer, just follow the on-screen instructions. I did it recently and it worked ok, you pretty much just need to read what's on the screen carefully to see what keystrokes / F-keys etc you need to select instead of using the mouse.

Hope that helps.

Good luck! Ubuntu is excellent.
