Software - February 2007

I am building an htpc for use as a divx player (off a hard drive), media storage server and pvr. I have heard that Linux is much to better to use on a low end system. It seems that the most user friendly version out there is ubuntu or kubuntu, but the requirements are 256mb of ram which is the same as xp.

I have a legal copy of xp that I can install and am wondering if I am better of sticking with that.

I have a older socket 370 mobo that I am using for now (733 celeron) that I will probably upgrade to something over 3Ghz within a year.

I don't plan on using it as a gaming machine, but I have read that Linux has very little commercial game support.

I used anti-spy, anti-virus, disk cleanup, and disk defragmenting programs. My internet connection is slower and the web page freezes while I'm online. I have windows XP and DSL at 100mps.

I have Access 2002 and am running Windows XP. I would like to update certain fields by using data imported from an Excel spreadsheet by specifying the key record number and contents of the target fields.
My spreadsheet has the proper headings corresponding to the table field names.
I can add new records okay and even insert a record to replace a deleted one.
When I try to do an update, I get the message that records were lost due to primary key violations.
I tried deleting the data in the target fields, but that didn’t work. Thanks for any help you can give.

is it true that in Itaily you are only aloud to install 200 or xp pro on one computer and only one computer? I'm told that you can install on up to 3 computers. but my girl over in Itaily has been told that she can only install it on one PC and then if she wants to install it on another she has to buy another coppy.

Media player 10,won't burn or rip music anymore. I am the administrator,or at least I think I am. How do I make sure? It says this: C00D11C7: Cannot play, burn, or synchronize the file. Also this: The required codec is not available on the codec server.
Error ID = 0xC00D11C7, Condition ID = 0x00000000. I have done what it told me to do. I have it set to Download codecs automatically. I have tried to rip from a few different Cd's and nothing works. I also have Nero and that burns cd's with no problem. I am thinking some other settings somewhere are wrong but I don't know where to look. Should I just unstall it and redownload it? Help!

If i convert say a music video to swf or flv format, will it be converted to vector video? If i then increase the resolution (via another conversion or editing), will it be increased by vectors or not?

I got a tablet for Christmas and it came with Corel and Photoshop Elements and Im into making lineart and all and It seems like it doesn't have a pen tool...also I heard you could download pen tools from the internet or something like that...Is that true?

I love making AMV's using the only CP program I have: windows media player. But i'm sick and tired of the subtitles. Does anyone know how to get rid of the subtitles from clips. Like is there a way to shorten them width wise or what. Plus is there any way to use .avi in WMP?? thx

I used to be able to open images and pictures from my emails using microsoft. But I recently bought a digital camera and downloaded the disk. Now whenever I get pictures or file it says kodak cannot find it, that it was renamed or moved my the computer. How can I get my files and pictures to open with microsoft again?

my original laptop had a microsoft office publication installed. I broke it (hot chocolate and expensive laptop not a good idea) and claimed over the insurance. the new one gave me office but for 60 days only...is there not a free download or will i have to fork out £119 for the students version? I have suffered with Works Processor for long enough now and am in the middle of Alevels with school computors which cant handle Works....? anyone help at all??

Is there a softwhere package that you buy so you can print out labels for your CDs? My friend has all her CD's done like this, with her name printed on it and the track listing. I assume they are printable... Is it just special paper or.....

I would just like to know all what is running in my computer. Also what is running in the backround. I think my boyfriend accidently downloaded something he shouldn't have and is running in the backround quietly. He asked me to fix it but I am not sure what it is. It is not in my program files but my computer has a lot of activity going on for what I have on it. It is way to slow for the speed I have. I have already checked for viruses,spyware, and malware. Anyone???
