Software - February 2007

I am just buying a laptop, then get it home & see the box says windows Vista. I have not heard much about this, what is it, is it just as good as XP? Here I looked forward to getting a system that has XP on it (from my old '98 desktop, lol) & now I just go straight to this Vista! :-(

Is it any good? I'd like to hear some opinions out there.

I have recently purchased a new monitor (Samsung SyncMaster731B), and just yesterday I found myself staring at a vertical start menu on my desktop! I know that I certainly did not change it's location from the bottom of my desktop, but it's now vertical and I don't know how to get it back to where it was. I doubt the monitor has anything to do with it, but just in case, y'know?

Oh! I am also running Windows XP Home, sp2.

Ok so I asked a similar question yesterday and the answers have been pretty much 50/50 Split. It hasn't really helped. Even searching on Google hasn't made it easier to find out a definitive answer. All I want to find out is CAN YOU UPGRADE 2 PC'S WITH ONE COPY OF VISTA? Or is the only way by buying 2 copies or a multi-use licence?

If you absolutely are sure of the answer (i.e have actually got a copy and DONE IT) then please let me know. I'm not interested in guesses or people saying it's piracy. I oinly want to know if Microsoft would block it or not. Even thier own site is as clear as mud on the topic.

Greatful for any reply from those who have actually tried whether it worked or not.

I have a real copy of Intervideo WinDVD Creator from my PC that I want to use on my laptop but my PC is HP and my laptop is Advent, when I try to load the software it tells me that 'this is not a qualified hp solution' anyone know of a way around this?

I have a set of 7 Compaq Quickrestore Recovery CD's. They are for my Presario 2100 notebook. My friend has a Toshiba 1800 series notebook. It could use a reformat. I'm wondering if this can be done. Basically clone my OS onto this other computer. Has anyone ever done this? Or can it even be done? Pros & cons?

I am attempting to install a zd1211 firmware program for my Belkin USB wireless adapter. First of all, I would like to explain that I have been dealing with computers since 1987. Why can't Linux (in my case Fedora Core 6) Just have a designation such as 'install' or 'setup'? Apparently the terms productivity and efficency have not reared its ugly head in thier lexacons. When I click on 'Add/ remove programs the damned program wants to accsess the internet ! Would someone, employed at Microsoft, please defect to Linux and give these people a clue. If I told you the whole world is crazy, but I'm OK, what would you say? If Linux is even halfway serious about toppleing Microsoft, you Linux folks have got a long road ahead. Should anyone reply to this who is not from a Windows perspective, and advises me to take up programming in 'C','C++', Perl Bailey, Monty Python, or any language like that will hear a tremondous thud as my head explodes !

I had it on my laptop last week, then I was no longer able to view my favorite online tv shows, so I tried to download the newest available flash player 9 from macromedia.com. It says 9 items to download, then when it starts downloading it only downloads 4 items. When finished, an error message pops up saying "Safari cannot find internet plug in. The page "Macromedia-Flash Player" has content of MIME type "application x/shockwave-flash" but you don't have a plug in installed for this MIME type. A plug in should be available on this page:" which takes me right back to the page where I downloaded the flash player in the first place.
Why can't I download this? What do I need to do ?

Over the years I have accumilated duplicate files (some under different names) from formatting, changing pc's, etc.
Does anyone know of a program that is effective yet also safe for consolidating redundant files?
I need somrthing that will also identify files based on content and not just name as well.
Is there anything out there that does this?

So I just purchased a new computer which alread had Windows Vista the Premium home edition installed on it. What is so great about this program? There are obviously some minor noticable changes but I don't see any major improvements from XP. What are your thoughts?

I have a weird computer problem. i have Command and Conquer Generals and Flight Simulater 2004, and both of them worked fine. and then one day, they just stopped working, i put them in the computer, and it just stayed on my desktop, it wouldnt do anything. i think what the problem might be is Direct X9, but my brothers computer is the exact same as mine, and he has Direct X9. i have no idea what the problem is, and i kinda want to figure it out! lol. i have a Dell Diminsion 3100. and it doesnt have any part upgrades, its just right from the store. please help me!!!
