When are you using Safari choose Preferences in the Safari menu. You should be presented with the General Settings page on which there is a homepage field.

I haven't confirmed this, but you may be able to drag the Google icon (in URL bar) to Safari's Home button to set Google as your homepage.

Try getting a different browser. Firefox is a good example. You might not like it, but only for testing. If Firefox takes about the same amount of time then there would be problems with the internet settings. If it doesn't check so that Safari is up to date, or stick with Firefox.
