It all depends on the current spec of your machine. Vista has certain minumim requirements that your machine must meet before you can run Vista and you can find out the minimum requirements for each version of Vista from this page:

To be honest though, if your machine is so old it's still running Windows 98 it's very unlikely it'll be up to the job of running Vista. Personally I'd advise upgrading to Windows XP instead, there's much more chance of your machine being able to run that.
