I have Windows XP SP1 currently and this was the latest thing when we got it, however we already have virus and spyware protection. Could I use that in addition to Windows Vista whatever?

No. Windows XP and Windows Vista are two different operating systems. Vista is a replacement for XP. SP is short for Service Pack, which is a collection of patches, upgrades and fixes for a particular operating system. So XP SP1 is a collection of fixes for XP while Vista SP1 (due around Christmas, I believe) is a collection of fixes for Vista.

BTW, XP SP1 is way outdated. You absolutely need to upgrade to SP2 for XP. It's available for free download from microsoft.com. You should have a program called Windows Update in your Start menu - run it and download SP2. It has a lot of security features built in, including a free firewall. Considering that you'll be getting about 3-5 years of updates when you do this, you should probably set it to update overnight. Oh, and they're talking about releasing XP SP3 later this year.
