OK If your going for Vista Home Basic these are the reccommended PC requirements:
* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
* 512 MB of system memory
* 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
* Support for DirectX 9 graphics and 32 MB of graphics memory
* DVD-ROM drive
* Audio Output
* Internet access (fees may apply)
NOTE: Remember that this is the BARE MINIMUM requirements to run Windows Vista Home Basic. Here are a bare minimum requirements to run Home Premium or higher:
* 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
* 1 GB of system memory
* 40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
* Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:
o WDDM Driver
o 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)
o Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware
o 32 bits per pixel
* DVD-ROM drive
* Audio Output
* Internet access (fees may apply)
Now Again that IS BARE MINIMUM. I would get a DVD burner, and probably 2GB or ram for running numerous prgrams and a way bigger hard drive. Good luck and Windows Vista is truly amazing I would recommend it.

According to Microsoft, computers capable of running Windows Vista are classified as Vista Capable and Vista Premium Ready.[37] A Vista Capable or equivalent PC needs to have at minimum an 800 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM and a DirectX 9 class graphics card. A computer that meets these requirements will be capable of running all editions of Windows Vista although some of the special features and high end graphics options may require additional or more advanced hardware.

I found out I needed a new graphics card and about 2 mgs of ram.

I would wait a year and see how stable it is.
