I'm an absolute beginner in "Debian 3.1" I've managed to download and install the operating system along with lots of packages from two DVDs, including "Desktop enviroment". Now I would like to start a desktop enviroment (I mean a GUI) but I don't know how. Following the steps in the help of the system won't work, all I get is errors (unrecognised commands).
Please help me with a step-by-step guidance, I know almost nothing about "Linux".

My subscription expires in two days,I'm running XP right now but will be switching to Vista sometime in the future.So I need security software that is compatible with both.I currently have Norton and the 2006 version is not compatible when I run the Vista upgrade advisor.

In fact, the file has nothing on it. It has a name, and looks like a mpeg file, nothing else. When I open the properties, I can see the file name, but none of the other fields are populated. I am unable to do anything with this file. I can't delete it, I can't move it and I can't get it to play. Any ideas?

I've tried safe mode, and that doesn't work. Let's just say this is something I need removed from my computer. Also, I wasn't stealing, this was put on by the author.

When using Outlook Express to send an email, the spell check is in French. So it tells me that I am misspelling simple words. How do I fix this propblem? Is it a known issue with Office 2007? I have not been able to find any information on it on the Microsoft web site.

Windows XP wont let me open my "My Documents" on my computer, when I try to, a popup somes up that either says "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" or something about a program preventer, i forgot what it said but its not coming up anymore. The problem came up earlier with any folder or program I tried, but now its specifically my documents. Restarting did nothing. I can't open or explore, and I need to retrieve something important from it, so could anyone help please?

Don't tell me it is Norton because I have Norton 2007 and my computer is jacked up. I run a full system scan and it doesn't find the trojan that is causeing pop-ups and other crappy programs to self-install on my computer. I heard F-scan or something like that was the best.

People are always saying that Microsoft / Windows is always having problems and is a waste of money, yet most people have have Microsoft and Windows programs. I have heard people say that Macs are better, but I have noticed that computer games and programs always come out at a later date for macs, and microsofts get them first. So why does everyone think Microsoft and Windows is so bad? I have had lot's of problems with windows and it does some weird things, but people with macs must get problems too?

I typed really fast in MS Word. Suddenly, a certain keystroke or a series of keystroke turned the document into a weird looking document with formatting symbols on it. For example, every "Enter" is now a flipped "P" Symbol; all the space is replaced by a dot. Some cut-and-paste text turns into macros.

I tried "undo" but it didn't change back to a normal document. The only time I see the normal document is using "Reading Layout" view.
What should I do to bring it back to normal?
