Windows XP wont let me open my "My Documents" on my computer, when I try to, a popup somes up that either says "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" or something about a program preventer, i forgot what it said but its not coming up anymore. The problem came up earlier with any folder or program I tried, but now its specifically my documents. Restarting did nothing. I can't open or explore, and I need to retrieve something important from it, so could anyone help please?

if you have windows disk, put it in cd bay. Close down any popup screen appearing from the cd.
Then click on start > run
type cmd, press ok
command window opens
type sfc /scannow
press Enter
sytem file checker utility will run and it will replace all damaged windows system files. After the scan is over you will be able to open windows explorer. It will take about half an hour to complete

Windows explorer is actually a little executable in your root windows folder named explorer.exe. There's a cool command you can execute that'll restore that file along with all your other protected system files like the calculator, notepad, etc.. The only thing is you need your Windows XP disk. If you do have it though, click on Start > Run, then type in "SFC /scannow" without the quotes. SFC stands for 'system file checker'. What that will do is copy those files directly from the cd to your computer, overwriting any of the ones that may be damaged.

Check it out. If there's nothing wrong with your computer, it'll finish doing it's job, and you won't notice anything after it finishes. The referenced article below will tell you more about it. Just one thing, after it finishes, do all your windows updates to make sure it didn't overwrite a hotfix.

If it's a virus and you have an antivirus to clean it up...then good. But if it's not a virus and there's a fix for it, there's big chance that you windows will have the same problem or other problems in the future, I recommend you re-install your Windows XP. Don't forget to back-up your files first.
