Go to a job website like monster.com and search for Java development positions, and that should give you an idea what it pays in your area, as it can vary.

Well, the ambition is good, but the bad news is, I would have to say no. Java is used for a few purposes. One, is to design web pages, and there are so many people out there that do this, it would be rather hard to land a job doing it. Two, it is used for games, chat rooms, and other online thems. Mainly a live, or real time programing enviroment... And it would take alot more than just studying to land a job doing what java does. If it was me, I would either one, stick in the field I'm in, or I would go to a local community collage and take some courses in computer repair, and some networking, that would get you a job. Networking people are in high demand, but you need some experiance as well, not just a cert. You will have to start off small, and work you way up. Most use GeekSquad to get the experiance they need and then move on. I started out in SBC out sourced call center doing tech support, and started my own business. But it is a good bit of information you have to learn and it takes awhile.
I would stay where I am at untill i get a degree and certs, then try and go get a job. People are relizing that it is very simple once they learn the mechanics of working on computers, and they are tired of grunt jobs, alot of people are trying to get into this field. Start out pay with minimum experiance will be around 9 and hour. Something you should consider but I wish you well, and hope you get what your looking for. I will add one more note.
Most computer people that go far, are pashionate about computers. Its like their life. An over all love for them, and understanding. I would say, if you get frustrated alot at computers, think about that. Its a nerve racking job sometimes.

Java is slowly dying out.
Pretty much programing in general is all being outsourced to cheap intellecual labour in china, india and many third world coutries.
A lot of people in the IT industry have told me this.
If you are concerned about the future then you should go with a Cisco network administration certification, there's huge potential adn future in this field (you can make between 50 - 300 thousand a year), and since it is an administrative job, it will not be outsourced to other countries.
