I typed really fast in MS Word. Suddenly, a certain keystroke or a series of keystroke turned the document into a weird looking document with formatting symbols on it. For example, every "Enter" is now a flipped "P" Symbol; all the space is replaced by a dot. Some cut-and-paste text turns into macros.

I tried "undo" but it didn't change back to a normal document. The only time I see the normal document is using "Reading Layout" view.
What should I do to bring it back to normal?

It sounds as if you have your Paragraph symbol on. Look up in the toolbar next to the Page Zoom window (the space where you can see the document at full page, 100%, 200% or whatever). To the left of that, there should be the paragraph symbol (looks like a funny-looking P). Click it and see if your document looks normal again.

The purpose of this key is to allow document authors to see exactly what formatting they're applying to a document. The symbols don't print out so that's why you don't see it when you look at the document in "Reading Layout" view.

Hi Cookie,
This so called "P" symbol is the Carraige Return symbol. It is used by professional typists to properly align their documents. Also, it shows you the line and page breaks.

You can switch this on or off by simply pressing the "P" symbolled button left to the ZOOM text box in your top right corner of your Standard tool bar.

I hope this helped you :)

Gosh. This happened to me last week and I tried so many things and was super pissed off........ I truly wish I could remember what I did. But I do recall that I found the solution in the Help menu and typed someting like "Remove Formatting" and I fixed it that way.

Good Luck!

Not to worry. It sounds like you simply hit the show/hide button on the Standard Toolbar. It looks like a backward P and is to the left of the % indicator.

It is a toggle. Press for on, press for off.

It is used to help you locate unwanted "Enter" or "Return" or whatever when you want to reformat.

All you have to do is click on the show/hide icon on the standard toolbar. That is the toolbar that has all the little icons like a globe, column choice.... The show/hide icon looks like one backwards "P" with the round part filled in and a "T" after it.

Good Luck!!
