I have tried a beta version of it and I thought it was great.
The only problem I found was that most of my hardware was not supported by the new OS.
Also, I found that I needed at least 1 gig of ram to get any sort of decent speed from it.
Luckily I have 2 hard disks so I could dual boot with XP and vista so if my hardware wouldn't work then I could go back to XP and scan a picture or use blutooth in that.
I would only upgrade when I got a new computer, but if you can be sure that your hardware is compatible and you have a fast enough machine then go for it

Do we have a choice its? Windows. Vista is nothing but eye-candy. And if you want to get work done. Keep using Windows XP. Even OpenSuse XGL latest version does the same eye-candy effect but on a P3 866MHz Machine with 256MD RAM and 64MB VGA. But Vista needs a P4 with at least 1Gig Ram and 128MB VGA to pull that off. Hah. I don't think its worth upgrade by PC and upgrading to Vista. If you are a professional or gamer or home-user use XP. At least its gone upto SP2 and is almost bug free.
Regards.

I love it. Seems pretty cool, lots of pretty menus, and its easier to navigate with. Its a fairly good operating system but a lot of programs don't work yet, it lags out when you try to open up too many programs, and it is a little glitchy from time to time.

pros: the glass border
cons: ugly interface, taking up LOTS of memory and disk space, twisted features, not many hardwares supported, not a flexible OS for programming, no real features added just changed looks, expensive if you buy, not neccessary in any way.
Microsoft just wanted to make it look "pretty."
